Every single year, Sid Maxwell takes a Dawson County team that has holes to fill, and fills them. Every year he plays to his strengths (his personnel). This year is no different. As Dawson County closes in on 200 all-time wins (the first victory gets them there), the Tigers are setting their sites to once again be a region title contender and make a deep playoff run.
Head Coach: Sid Maxwell, 8th season
2021 Record: 7-5; State Sweet 16; Region Runner-Up
“Our expectations every year are to be a competitive football team and be competitive in every game,” says Maxwell.
^REGION 7-AAA GAME
Key Departures: Zach Holtzclaw, Conley Dyer, Braedon Hubbard, Logan Berry, Bailey Dameron, AJ Moore
Losing a 3-year starter under center (Holtzclaw), a starting RB (Dyer), and one of the state’s top receivers in Dameron, as well as defensive standouts Hubbard, Berry, and Moore, and the Tigers have some major gaps to fill.
Key Returning Players: Cade Adams, Kade Moledor, Kevin Haymond, Matt Bennett
Adams, Moledor, Bennett, and Haymond combined for over 260 tackles. That’s a HUGE plus going into this season. The defense will shine.
Up & Coming Players: Sawyer Bearden, Simeon Welch, Briggs Weaver, Braden Cane, Luke Smith, Davis Glass
“We always prepare players and expect them to have a big year,” states Maxwell. “Success depends on the next ones to step up for program success. Athletically, Sawyer Bearden, Simeon Welch, Briggs Weaver, Braden Crane and Luke Smith are underclassmen that have the ability to be impact players.”
Offense: Spread
Davis Glass is slated to take the QB position after Zach Holtzclaw (3-year starter) and Coey Watson (4-year starter). It’s been awhile since a new QB was under center. In the backfield, look for Ryan Moledor, Matt Bennett, and Kenny Nelson to tote the rock. Dom LeBlanc is back to lead the receivers, and Braden Cane will contribute there as well.
Defense: Multiple
The two-headed monster of Cade Adams and Kade Moledor have long been doing damage, and will continue to do so this year. Matt Bennett, Kenny Nelon, and Kevin Haymond will be huge on that side of the ball.
Trenches: “These young men, if they can stay healthy and continue to develop, can impact the success of our team,” adds Maxwell.
Strengths: Senior leadership is definitely the strength of this year’s team, according to Maxwell.
Focusing On: “Our focus has been evaluating personnel for the many offense positions we have open and developing the scheme to fit their individual strengths,” adds Maxwell.
