Rabun’s title quest ends at Thomasville [VIDEO]

In what was a #1-versus-#2 matchup, Rabun County (the top seed) fell to Thomasville on the road, 49-24 to end their title hopes in the 2A Quarterfinals. The Wildcats held tight at 14-apiece in the second quarter before the Bulldogs scored on back-to-back possessions to take a 28-14 halftime lead.

Rabun County was flagged over 20 times in the game, slowing any momentum and preventing any true rhythym. Meanwhile, Thomasville scored 3 more times in the second half to go up 49-17 before Gunner Stockton threw a TD on his final throw of his career to Jaden Gibson, which capped the scoring at 49-24.

Thomasville struck first with a 4-yd TD by Malik Harper. The Wildcats responded immediately with a Stockton 24-yd TD pass to Lang Windham to tie the game. With just seconds left in the first, the Bulldogs struck again with another Harper TD, this time a 13-yarder.

Rabun County came up with their last game-tying score with 7:22 left in the second, as Stockton converted a 4th-down conversion from the 5-yd line to knot the game at 14.

On the next play from scrimmage, Thomasville QB Shannen White raced off to a 62-yd TD to take the lead for good. White then threw an 11-yd TD to Cole Shaw late in the half to push the lead to 28-14.

Rabun County got a stop and then a 51-yd field goal from Gus Hood to open the third, closing to within 28-17. Again Harper struck, this time just seconds later with a 52-yd TD. Before the fourth, White had a 1-yd plunge to give Thomasville an insurmountable lead of 42-17. They scored again before Stockton’s late TD to Gibson from 20 yards out.

Stockton finished his career with 158 passing yards and 2 TD, and 82 rushing yards and a TD. Windham had 58 rushing yards and 75 receiving yards and a TD, while Gibson had 60 receiving yards and a score.

Rabun finishes the season 11-2 overall, and had played in their seventh straight quarterfinals.
