Hubbard, Tigers defense shine in Dawson’s big win over Trojans [VIDEO]
The stakes were high as Dawson County hosted North Hall in a game where the winner earned a home playoff game and the region runner-up title. The Tigers (6-4; 5-1 in 7-AAA) didn’t disappoint, making a statement with a 26-8 win over the Trojans (6-4; 4-2).
Braedon Hubbard stole the show, racking up a pair of 70-plus yard TD catches from Zach Holtzclaw to propel the Tigers to a 17-0 halftime lead. After throwing an interception on the very first play from scrimmage, Holtzclaw made up for it and then some with a 74-yard TD pass to Hubbard late in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Tigers took advantage of a North Hall missed field goal and turned it into another long TD, again from Holtzclaw to Hubbard to push it to 14-0. After coming up with a red zone fumble, the Tigers moved the ball with a big passing play from Holtzclaw to Hubbard – again – leading to a 28-yard Dom LeBlanc field goal at the buzzer.
The third quarter saw the Tigers go to the ground game to kill the clock. Dawson got a 25-yard TD run by Conley Dyer just before the end of the quarter to pad the lead to 24-0. The Trojans, who went to air more than usual, eventually got on the board with a 1-yard plunge by one of the state’s top rushers in Kevin Rochester to open up the fourth quarter.
A successful 2-point conversion made it a 2-score game at 24-8, but when the Trojans got the ball back at their own 1-yard line, AJ Moore sacked Bradford Puryear in the end zone to punctuate the 28-6 Tigers win.
The Tigers claim the region runner-up spot out of 7-AAA, which comes with a home playoff game in the first round.
