Crystal Ball: Week Seven Predictions

Welcome to Week Seven! Most teams are kicking off region play this week, while others are getting a final tune-up. The games mean a whole lot more at this point.

DISCLAIMER: We dissect the numbers, check against other projections, utilize the brain and not the heart. If we pick against any of our beloved 11 programs, take it as a diss if you want, or use it as motivation. We obviously would love to see all 11 programs win every single game, so we’ll celebrate even if we’re wrong if it means our locals walk off the field as winners.

THE LOCALS (Home Games Listed First)

#6 Stephens County Indians vs #8 Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes

This is one of the better games across the area, and kicks off region play with a game that has heavy region title aspirations. Stephens County and Monroe Area are both undefeated. This one truly could swing either way, but it appears the Indians are ready for this one (well-rested after a BYE week) and have the home field advantage.
VERDICT: Stephens County

Lumpkin County Indians vs Gilmer Bobcats

Lumpkin has momentum here. Playing at home certainly helps as well. This is a region opener at the Burial Grounds, and Gilmer comes in at 2-2 overall and has not looked very good defensively. If Lumpkin and Cooper Scott can keep the chains moving and put pressure on the Bobcats, we like the home team here, even if the Maxwell computer favors Gilmer by 17.
VERDICT: Lumpkin County

#1 Rabun County Wildcats @ #3 Pierce County Bears

This is a big one! Rabun County travels to Pierce County for a top-3 matchup between state champion favorites. Pierce are the defending state champs. They are coming off a shutout statement win over powerhouse Fitzgerald, and their 3rd-ranked defense (6.6 per game) has been phenomenal (33 total points allowed this season). That said, they haven’t seen an offense like Rabun County’s and Gunner Stockton. Look for the Wildcats to make a statement here with both their offense and defense. It won’t be as easy as the last 3 games, but we’re calling a Rabun victory here that makes a HUGE statement.
VERDICT: Rabun County

#1 Jefferson Dragons @ East Hall Vikings

The Dragons are fresh off a big-time win over Flowery Branch that likely already determined the region championship. East Hall will have no shot in slowing down Jefferson. This game will be in hand fairly quickly. Look for a typical performance by both Sammy Brown and Malaki Starks. Every time they run the ball in this game, it could easily go for six points.
VERDICT: Jefferson

Habersham Central Raiders @ #1 Buford Wolves

The Raiders are coming off back-to-back back-breaking losses to arch-rivals Stephens and then to a Winder-Barrow team that was a double-digit underdog going in. There’s no time to wallow in it, as heading to Buford is going to be a brutal assignment. VERDICT: Buford

White County Warriors @ North Hall Trojans

The Warriors fell in dramatic fashion to Dawson at home despite going up by 2 scores late. This is the time to see exactly who White County is as a team. A loss here makes it just about impossible (though there would still be a sliver of hope) to make the playoffs. A win, and White County not only would still maintain its own destiny, but would carry momentum forward. Defense MUST come up big here at The Brickyard. Technically, the Trojans are favored by 8 officially, but we’ll go with the road team.
VERDICT: White County

Union County Panthers @ Riverside Military Eagles

The Panthers may have gotten some momentum going on offense, though they still seek win number one under Michael Perry. Could this be the game that Union gets in the win column? Riverside, if you recall, took last season off amidst the COVID concerns. As expected, it’s taking awhile to get back to game speed. It has shown, as the Eagles are 1-3 overall and have just 44 points. This looks like the game Union grabs for that first win.
VERDICT: Union County

Commerce Tigers @ Greene County Tigers

Commerce looked much better last week than it has in any of the first 3 games. Being 2-2 is not what the Tigers hoped for, but those games don’t really determine anything. Opening region play with Greene County will be a great litmus test. The other Tigers are 3-2, though they tend to give up points (116 in 5 games). The offense for Greene has really had one great performance and a couple other pretty good outings. This one could be close, but we’ll take the Tigers…of Commerce.
VERDICT: Commerce

Towns County Indians @ Lincoln County Red Devils

The Indians are riding as high as ever at 4-1 to open the season. This is the biggest test yet, traveling on the road to Lincoln, who earlier in the season was ranked #5 in the state. Won’t be an easy assignment at all for Towns County, but there’s so much hype, momentum, and destiny about this Indians team that we just can’t pick against them right now.
VERDICT: Towns County

Dawson County, Banks County
