Raiders win defensive battle over White County [VIDEO]
For all the attention the offenses get these days, it’s worth noting that the Habersham Central Raiders latest win was a product of its defense. The Raiders won 21-12 behind a pair of defensive touchdowns and multiple fourth down stops.
A blocked punt for a TD and an interception for a TD gave Habersham a 14-0 lead it wouldn’t relinquish, despite a stellar performance from White County’s Silas Mulligan.
Garrett Turner blocked and recovered a punt in the end zone for the game’s first score with 5:35 left in the first. In the final minute of the first, Brennan Crouse picked off a pass and took it in for a 14-0 Raiders lead. White County responded early in the second when Mulligan tossed on a reverse to Darius Cannon, who high-stepped in from 9 yards out. The extra point failed, leaving White County down 14-6.
Coming out of the halftime break, Simarcus Burney bulldozed his way in from 12 yards out for the only offensive TD of the game for Hab Central. It gave the Raiders a sizeable 21-6 lead. Mulligan scored a rushing TD from 6 yards out with 3:25 to go in the third to pull within 21-12 (2-point try failed). Neither team scored the rest of the way.
The Warriors (1-3) and the Raiders (2-1) were both coming off their first wins of the season, though Habersham Central was more rested with a bye week following that win. With the win, Habersham is now 8-4 in the all-time series, winning 3 of the last 4 meetings.
