Gridiron Preview 2021: Lumpkin County

The Indians are itching for a win, or hopefully multiples. In this third season under coach Caleb Sorrells, Lumpkin County looks to take the next step.

Head Coach: Caleb Sorrells, 3rd Season
2020 Record:
0-10; No Playoffs

“The expectation is to be competitive,” says coach Caleb Sorrells. “We have talked for months about putting the past behind us, focusing on the windshield and not the rearview mirror, and moving forward. With a full year of experience, offseason work, and growth under our belts, I want to see us play more confidently, more consistently, and with more attention to detail.”

Personnel & Schemes

Key Departures: Drew Allison, Tanner Kirk, Jared Hoch

Key Returning Players: Ricky Hicks, Caleb Norrell, Cooper Scott, Cameron Stringer

“Lots of rising sophomores and juniors who played a ton last year and will hopefully be poised to capitalize on that experience,” adds Sorrells.  11th – Cameron Stringer (RB/LB), Caleb Norrell (WR/DB), Cooper Scott (QB)

Up & Coming Players: FR Cal Faulkner (DB/QB/WR), SO Preston Cox & Harper Davenport (both DB/WR), Will Wood (RB/LB), Dakota Bennett (TE/LB)

Offense: It’ll start with QB Cooper Scott and RBs Tavion Lawrence, Will Wood, and Cameron Stringer. Caleb Norrell will be the go-to at WR.

Defense: SR DEs AJ Reeves and Andrew Adams, along with JR OLB Tavion Lawrence will anchor the defense.

Trenches: The O-Line has five returning starters, all of whom are seniors. That’s HUGE!

“Deepest and most experienced unit on both sides,” adds Sorrells. “Five starters on OL are returning starters and seniors, all will play significant time on DL as well. We’ll rely heavily on them to set the tone and carry the load. Those guys are Andrew Adams, Cam Simpson, Ricky Hicks, AJ Reeves, and Tucker Bagley.”

Strengths & Areas of Focus

Strengths:  Offensive Line – 5 returning starters, all seniors. “They have embraced the idea of putting us on their shoulders and being the leaders,” states Sorrells.

Focusing On: Blocking & tackling. “Not just a coaching cliche; we went back and completely retaught, from the ground up, the two most important fundamentals of the game,” says Sorrells.
