Volleyball Preview 2021: Dawson County

The Lady Tigers are coming off their toughest season in history since the inaugural 2016 season, where they were 3-29 overall. After 3 straight playoff runs, including an Elite 8 appearance in 2019, Dawson County fell to 5-14 last season in a pandemic-riddled year. Coach Tanya Porter and company expect to take a leap back toward that incredible 2019 version of the volleyball program.

Head Coach: Tanya Porter, 6th Season
2020 Record:
5-14; No Playoffs; #7 State Ranking

“I am excited about our potential this season and if all things come together as we are hoping, we could have an amazing season,” says coach Tanya Porter.

Personnel

Key Departures: Olivia Walls, Hayley Selzer, Kirklyn Porter (not playing volleyball in 2021)

Key Returning Players: Emma Pelfrey, Avery Herring, Jessie Mann, Meghan Roche, Emerald Sallee, Abby Clouser, Abby Felaki (move-in from Canada), Cameron Hipps

The glaring holes on the roster will be huge voids left by Olivia Walls and Hayley Selzer. That duo were the undisputed heart and soul of the Lady Tigers. Walls had a school record 1,170 career assists. Girls will need to step up to fill those gaps this season.

“Emma and Avery are our only two seniors so we are definitely looking to them for leadership and to help us manage our team chemistry,” says Porter. “We also have three returning starters that will be key to our success.  Jessie Mann and Meghan Roche will return for us at the OH position and Emerald Sallee will complete our backcourt nicely as our returning Libero. Abby Clouser was with us last season, but played limited varsity minutes. She will start varsity this season as setter and RH. We have two transfer students that will also be instrumental in pursuing a bid for the post season playoffs. Abby Felaki moved from Canada and will also be a setter and RH for us, and Cameron Hipss is a versatile front-row player that will see significant varsity minutes this season.”
