Boys Basketball Power Rankings – January

As we toss out the 2020 calendar and unwrap a 2021 edition, we have plenty of results that net us a much more clear image of where the local teams stack. Here’s the January edition of our Power Rankings.

#1 TOWNS COUNTY
RECORD: 6-1 (1-0)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #1
The Indians are playing exceptionally well. No reason to dethrone what is currently the #4 team in the state. From proven ballers like Kolby Moss, Aidan Berrong, and Collin Crowder, now guys like Jake McTaggart, Kabe Ellis, and Zane Floyd have emerged to make this one of the best teams around Northeast Georgia. The team has one small slip up to Collins Hill.
#2 WHITE COUNTY
RECORD: 7-5 (4-1)
REGION: #3
The Warriors are riding 2 straight wins, and have taken down ranked teams like Dawson and Banks this season. Right now, despite losses early on to Lumpkin and Habersham, these guys’ full body of work earns them this spot.

#3 JEFFERSON
RECORD: 8-3 (3-1)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #4
The Dragons are red hot with 5 consecutive wins. Wins have come over Banks County and Stephens County, and Jefferson, now fully fledged with their football season over, can make a legit region title run.
#4 BANKS COUNTY
RECORD: 11-6 (1-0)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #5
The Leopards are ranked #8 in Class 2A, and are looking just as good as ever. Losses include falling to Towns, White, and Jefferson, which is a good enough sample to keep them below those 3 teams.

#5 DAWSON COUNTY
RECORD: 10-5 (3-1)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #6
The Tigers are playing great ball, racking up 5 straight victories. The lone region loss came against White County, and that rematch is coming up very soon. If you recall, that game came down to the final second.
#6 TALLULAH FALLS
RECORD: 8-2 (1-0)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #7
TFS is ranked #10 in the state polls and are winners of 6 in a row, the most among local teams actively. The team has many athletic players who can score.
#7 STEPHENS COUNTY
RECORD: 6-5 (0-1)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #9
The Indians have many wins over local teams, such as 2 each over Habersham and Rabun, as well as one over Union. That keeps them above those teams for the time being. This team has a good shot to make the playoffs.
#8 HABERSHAM CENTRAL
RECORD: 7-7 (0-4)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #2
The Raiders are on a 2-game slide, which bumps them down some. They’re 7-7 overall and seeking that first region win.
#9 LUMPKIN COUNTY
RECORD: 6-7 (2-3)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #8
The Indians are in the hunt for the playoffs, though the guys would like to fall on the right side of some of the closer games. This is not a team to overlook.
#10 RABUN COUNTY
RECORD: 2-13 (0-0)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #11
The Cats got a win over Commerce to keep them above the Tigers. Connor McKay continues to have a stellar season for Rabun.
#11 COMMERCE
RECORD: 3-10 (1-1)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #10
Commerce has dropped 4 in a row, though on the positive side, the Tigers already have a region win to their name.
#12 UNION COUNTY
RECORD: 0-4 (0-0)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #12
The Panthers have been unable to get a game in in quite some time, still sitting at 0-4, which is the same mark they had the last time we did our Power Rankings.
