Football Power Rankings – Week Six

Halfway point is officially here – and you can thank Dawson County for creating mass chaos in the updated Power Rankings. With head-to-heads between Dawson, White, Habersham, and Stephens, the order is shuffled.

#1 JEFFERSON

LAST RANK: #1
RECORD: 5-0 (0-0)
LAST: W 40-10 @ #5 Flowery Branch
NEXT: vs East Hall

The #1-ranked Dragons destroyed Flowery Branch in a top-five billing on the road. No questioning that these guys will now almost certainly go the rest of the regular season without a loss. East Hall will be a quick game for Jefferson.

#2 RABUN COUNTY

LAST RANK: #2
RECORD: 4-1 (0-0)
LAST: W 70-36 @ East Jackson
NEXT: @ Pope

#1 Rabun set a school record with 70 points on East Jackson, led by Gunner Stockton’s 8 total TDs (career high). Most of the 36 that EJ got was in garbage time against backups and third string. Next up is Pope on the road, which will be a challenge in terms of numbers (much larger school).

#3 COMMERCE

LAST RANK: #5
RECORD: 4-1 (0-0)
LAST: W 41-9 @ Mt. Paran
NEXT: vs Greene County

The #5-ranked Commerce Tigers had a blowout win on the road, and prepare next for Greene County. The Tigers continue to impress.

#4 DAWSON COUNTY

LAST RANK: #7
RECORD: 2-3 (1-0)
LAST: W 42-35 vs #5 White County
NEXT: BYE

Dawson County made a monumental statement that the Tigers are not going anywhere. They are now the region favorites after a nail-biting, wild shootout win over White County. Dawson had a bye to prepare for it, and have a bye to recover.

#5 WHITE COUNTY

LAST RANK: #3
RECORD: 4-1 (0-1)
LAST: L 35-42 @ Dawson County
NEXT: vs North Hall

The #5-ranked Warriors fell twice on Friday night. Two losses, and the one to the Tigers is the least concerning. J Ben Haynes went down with a leg injury, and there’s no obvious timeframe of his return. This season hinges on him as well as his supporting cast, but there’s no denying his impact. Now we just patiently wait to see what happens with that, as the Warriors meanwhile prepare for North Hall.

#6 STEPHENS COUNTY

LAST RANK: #4
RECORD: 4-1 (0-0)
LAST: BYE
NEXT: @ Monroe Area

Stephens County doesn’t really deserve to slide two spots down, but it’s only because of the head-to-heads between the Indians and Habersham, White, and Dawson. White County throttled Stephens in Week 1, and in turn lost to Dawson, thus making this the only sensible spot. The Indians got a bye week to rest up and prep for Monroe Area to open region play.

#7 HABERSHAM CENTRAL

LAST RANK: #6
RECORD: 3-2 (1-0)
LAST: W 27-21 @ Winder-Barrow
NEXT: vs #1 Buford

Habersham got back on the winning track in a big way with a comeback thrilling win over Winder. Joshua Pickett was clutch with 4 TD in the win as the Raiders grabbed the pivotal opening region win. The gauntlet now begins with #1 Buford next up at home.

#8 UNION COUNTY

LAST RANK: #8
RECORD: 2-2 (0-0)
LAST: Cancelled vs Woodland
NEXT: BYE

Union County for the second time had a game called off for COVID reasons. That comes before a bye week. So it will be a long time between games for the Panthers.

#9 TOWNS COUNTY

LAST RANK: #9
RECORD: 2-3 (0-0)
LAST: BYE
NEXT: vs Lincoln

Towns County received a bye week to prep for what will be a tough matchup at home against Lincoln. Let’s see how the Indians respond from their first multi-loss streak of the season.

#10 BANKS COUNTY

LAST RANK: #10
RECORD: 1-5 (0-0)
LAST: L 0-44 vs #5 Haralson County
NEXT: BYE

Banks County has already 6 games in the books, and will have two byes in the next three weeks. Time to hit reset for the Leopards and work on all things before region play begins.

#11 LUMPKIN COUNTY

LAST RANK: #11
RECORD: 0-4 (0-0)
LAST: BYE
NEXT: @ Gilmer

Lumpkin County still seeks win number one, and after a bye week, the Indians will travel to Gilmer to see if they can chalk one up in the win column.
