Game of the Week: Stephens County vs Habersham Central

Our Game of the Week sends us to The Reservation for a rivalry as rich and old as any around.

STEPHENS COUNTY

The Indians have been a great surprise, going 3-1 on the season. What’s surprising is the leap from the Week One 44-6 loss to White County to where they are now. With three straight wins, this team’s confidence is as strong as it’s been in years. The emergence of sophomore QB Ben Stowe has been absolutely pivotal. Gamarion Carter has been the weapon we all know he is. Aside from Stowe, the biggest impact player we didn’t see coming is defensive lineman Jahari Burns.

HABERSHAM CENTRAL

Habersham Central is coming off a very tough loss to #5-ranked White County that came down to a final drive. The Raiders (2-1) are run-heavy as we’ve learned already, but Joshua Pickett does have an arm that he’ll use when he has to. The defense, as we’ve said before, has been fantastic, and leaps and bounds better than years past.

OUR PREDICTION

This matchup is intense, to be certain. To add some extra sauce on this one, it marks both team’s final tune-ups prior to region play. OUR PICK: FAN VOTE

DO WE BRING LUCK?

Not for the Raiders. We’ve captured 45 games for the Raiders (most out of all local programs), and they’ve gone 13-32 in those contests. That track record is a little better for Stephens County, as they have gone 8-8 in 16 games we’ve documented for them.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

This rivalry has some DEEP roots! Stephens owns this series all-time, 30-12-1. It dates back to 1970 to be exact, and both teams traded wins and losses pretty evenly until 1985. That’s when the pendulum really swung in the Indians’ favor. Stephens won 9 of the next 12 in the series heading into 1996. That season marked the last time in quite awhile that Habersham won. The streak began, as the Indians won the versions in 1997-01, 2004-07, 2012-13, and 2016-18. That marked 14 in a row for Stephens over a 23-year span. Last year, the tides turned with a Raider victory. Who’s got this one? Below is the full six-pack of BLITZ versions of this rivalry we have captured.

2009: SC 21, HC 7 (Scrimmage) | 2013: SC 49, HC 14 | 2016: SC 27, HC 7 | 2017: SC 49, HC 46 | 2018: SC 41, HC 28 | 2019: HC 27, SC 21
