Third Quarter Surge Sends Warriors Past Raiders to Remain Unbeaten [VIDEO]

J Ben Haynes took a knee to run out the final seconds, as the Warriors beat the Raiders 28-21 on a foggy cool fall night in Mt. Airy. Habersham Central (2-1) had a brief third quarter lead, but the #5-ranked Warriors (4-0) scored twice in a little over three minutes to take the lead for good.

The teams squared off for the fourth year in a row, and walked away as winners in Haynes’ freshman and senior year in the series. The win also marked the 300th all-time for White County. Habersham still holds the all-time series lead at 7-4.

Haynes rushed for three touchdowns, while Habersham’s Joshua Pickett tallied two rushing and one passing TD in what proved to be a great game.

It took until late in the first quarter before White County drew first blood, as Silas Mulligan rushed in from 20 yards out for the 7-0 lead. Less than 50 seconds later, Pickett found the edge on a keeper, tight-roped the sideline, and scampered in for a 63-yard TD to tie the game.

The Warriors scored in the final seconds of the first when Haynes rushed in for the first of his three TDs, this coming from 21 yards out. Midway through the second, Pickett threw a 16-yd TD to Austin Wood, who made a great catch in the end zone to knot the game at 14 apiece.

On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, the Raiders took their first lead when Pickett found a lane and dodged his way through traffic for a 60-yard TD. It took until 6:51 left in the quarter before White County responded. Haynes rushed in from 4 ticks out to tie the game at 21.

A few minutes later, Haynes kept for a 41-yard TD to give the Warriors the lead for good, as they held on for the 28-21 victory.

White County will have its first bye week in Week Five, while the Raiders travel to Stephens County for the ever-intense rivalry matchup.

White County is 4-0 for the first time since 1975, and Raiders’ running back Jackson Clouatre eclipsed 2,000 career rushing yards in the game.
