Crystal Ball: Week 3 Predictions

Our guesses were just about perfect save a couple of games last week. Here are the official predictions for Week 3.

DISCLAIMER: We dissect the numbers, check against other projections, utilize the brain and not the heart. If we pick against any of our beloved 11 programs, take it as a diss if you want, or use it as motivation. We obviously would love to see all 11 programs win every single game, so we’ll celebrate even if we’re wrong if it means our locals walk off the field as winners.

THE LOCALS

#1 Rabun County vs #2 Jefferson Dragons

This marks another #1 vs #2 in Tiger. For the second straight week, it also features a pair of 5-star QBs. Gunner Stockton is sure to get his fair share of highlights in this one, as will opposing 5-star Malaki Starks. The Dragons will be the toughest team that Rabun has faced in the past three years, at least on paper and as far as depth goes. It’s been 17 in a row for Jefferson in the series going back to the 1950s. That said, while this one could easily go either way, the law of average would suggest this might be the Rabun team to pull off a win over Jefferson. The official line is even for this game, and neither Rabun nor Jefferson plays a better team on their schedule. This will tell a lot. VERDICT: RABUN

#6 White County vs Pickens

The Warriors are ranked #6, which is their highest state ranking since the #5 ranking in 1972. It’s well worth the hype, as we’ve been trying to tell you. This last game, a 50-47 win over #8-ranked Hart County, was legit and just shows that this program has arrived. Next up is Pickens. This one could be over by halftime. VERDICT: WHITE

Towns County vs Lumpkin County

We’ll make a prediction that is full-proof. The Indians will win! See what we did there? The Towns County Indians are fresh off their first win since 2018, and the Lumpkin County Indians will be coming off a bye week. They need a win in a big way, and even on the road, we think they may be able to chalk one up in that column. VERDICT: LUMPKIN

Dawson County vs South Forsyth

Dawson County is dying for a win. It’s been two tough weeks to start, and the Tigers are likely going to take some frustration out on South Forsyth. We don’t feel sorry for SF. The Tigers are due in. VERDICT: DAWSON

Union County vs Chestatee

Union County is 0-2 for the first time in quite awhile. Chestatee (0-1) won’t roll over, as they have a legitimate dual threat QB in Christian Charles. A lot will fall on the defense for the Panthers. With Logan Helcher improving weekly at QB, that helps. But Union definitely has to miss Jonah Daniel at RB. VERDICT: CHESTATEE

Banks County vs East Jackson

Banks County seeks a win in a desperate way. East Jackson has been unable to play due to COVID-19 issues, so there might be some rust they have to shake off. Being at home might help the Leopards. VERDICT: BANKS

Stephens County @ Jackson County

Big-time win for the Indians last week over North Hall. Now that they got the proverbial monkey off the back, they can use that momentum toward Jackson County. The Panthers though are well-coached, and have almost quietly built themselves into a dangerous program. It won’t come easy, but we’ll take Stephens if they play the way they did last week. VERDICT: STEPHENS

#5 Commerce @ #1 Athens Academy

The Tigers are once again on the upswing. Their new #5 ranking marks the fifth straight year of achieving that kind of respect. This next contest will be monumental if they can pull it off. Still, being at home does matter for the #1 team in the state. We hope to be wrong, but… VERDICT: ATHENS ACADEMY

THE OTHERS

Predicted winners are in bold

#6 Flowery Branch vs Gainesville
Johnson vs West Hall
North Hall vs Hart
