Week 1 Scores & Recaps

The first night of football was a complete success. Here are your finals and game recaps (in a nutshell).

The Most Dramatic – Fannin County edging Union 24-22, taking the win on a late TD pass

The Biggest Blowout – White County 44-6 over Stephens

The Biggest Upset – #8 Dawson County falling to Cass, 23-7

THE LOCALS

White County 44, Stephens County 6

Our Game of the Week was over by halftime, as J Ben Haynes accounted for 5 total scores and the Warriors led 34-6 at the break. Haynes threw for 3 TD and rushed for 2 TD. As we predicted, the first TD of the season was a TD pass to Cooper Turner. It went for 24 yards. If you recall, we predicted a first TD for that duo to go for 25.

#7 Commerce 41, Banks County 18

Commerce made it a 33-2 lead in the all-time series. The Tigers scored a TD on the second play of the season, a 72-yarder by Dreylan Martin. Sammy Brown and Martin scored again in the quarter to go up 20-6. Banks cut it within 20-12 in the second, but Brown added his second TD to push it to 27-12 by the half. The freshman Brown added his third score in the third and Trey Huff had a TD to polish off the scoring.

#1 Rabun County 35, Ridgeland 0

The Cats’ defense was spectacular after Rabun made the LONG journey to northwest Georgia. Gunner Stockton did his thing, accounting for 4 TD in the win. Tate Ramey had a couple of TD catches, as did Turner Grimmett. Stockton showed off his athleticism with a rushing TD in which he leapt and helicoptered into the end zone, and later threw a Tim Tebow “jump pass” to Grimmett for a TD. The Cats were up 28-zip going into the break. Stockton’s 3 TD passes put him at 80 for his career, and his rushing score put him at 37 in that arena, for a total of 117.

Cass 23, #8 Dawson County 7

Another shocker for the Tigers, as they suffered a 23-7 loss to Cass on the road to open the season. Zach Holtzclaw had the lone score on a 31-yd TD pass to Tyler Lane.

Habersham Central 27, Madison County 6

The Raiders nearly pitched a shutout before Madison County knocked home a late score. Joshua Pickett had a great game and had a fourth quarter TD pass that was the nail in the coffin for Madison. Pickett and Jackson Clouatre accounted for three of the TDs and over 300 yards. Clouatre had roughly 175 rushing yards. Austin Wood had a TD catch, and Patrick Tedder recorded two interceptions.

Franklin County 33, Lumpkin County 3

The Indians got off to a slow start at home against Franklin, and ultimately fell 33-3. Lumpkin notched a late field goal with under two to play to avoid a shutout.

Fannin County 24, #9 Union County 22

A shocking result in Blarisville, as Fannin opened the game with a 13-play, 77-yard drive to go up 7-0. JJ Littles stripped the QB late in the first, and Dalton Allen took it in for a game-tying TD. Jonah Daniel was injured early in the second half, hampering the Union offense. Fannin went ahead 14-7, and the Panthers again tied it up with a 1-yard TD by Logan Helcher. Fannin was up 17-14 at the break, but Helcher had another 1-yd TD to put UC up 20-17. However, with under 6 minutes to go, Fannin scored the game-winner on a 23-yard TD pass.

Armuchee 10, Towns County 7

The Indians almost grabbed their first win since the 2018 season, but fell in a nail-biter to Armuchee.

THE OTHERS

St. Pius 38, #4 Flowery Branch 28
Cherokee Bluff 44, Johnson 0
Jackson County 26, West Hall 18
