SEPTEMBER Softball Power Rankings

We made it through an entire calendar month of games, which gives us a much clearer picture as to where all of our teams sit. Here is the third version of our 2020 Power Rankings, September edition.

#1 JEFFERSON

RECORD: 4-1 (3-0)
LAST RANKING: #1

Jefferson, currently ranked inside the top 5 in the state poll, continues to impress, getting off to a hot 3-0 start in region play. The girls have outscored opponents 37-14 in the process, a great mix of offense and stingy pitching/defense.

#2 COMMERCE

RECORD: 5-2 (4-0)
LAST RANKING: #4

The #4-ranked Lady Tigers continue to clobber opponents. To date, Commerce has put up 53 runs against just 14 allowed. A 4-0 start within region has CHS looking the part of a region champion…and probably more.

#3 HABERSHAM CENTRAL

RECORD: 8-3 (2-2)
LAST RANKING: #3

The Lady Raiders saw their eight-game win streak come to a close with back-to-back losses. This team is staring down the barrel of a very special season if they can get back on track and learn to have a short memory.

#4 UNION COUNTY

RECORD: 5-1 (0-0)
LAST RANKING: #5

The #5-ranked Lady Panthers are now 5-1 overall, and have scored 54 runs while surrendering just 16. The only loss came to Lumpkin, a team Union has beaten twice now to get double revenge.

#5 BANKS COUNTY

RECORD: 4-4 (0-0)
LAST RANKING: #2

Banks County slides down more after dropping some more games. Don’t be fooled though…as region games pick up, so too will the Lady Leopards in region. The non-region slate has been difficult to say the least, as the girls have allowed more runs than they’ve scored.

#6 LUMPKIN COUNTY

RECORD: 5-6 (3-1)
LAST RANKING: #6

The Lady Indians score a lot (61 runs), but allow even more (64). This is a program that has made winning habitual, so no doubt the wins will continue to pile up, even in a tough region.

#7 WHITE COUNTY

RECORD: 5-3 (4-1)
LAST RANKING: #7

The Lady Warriors are on a hot streak, and are now 4-1 in region play after a win over Dawson on Monday. It’s one of the better offenses in the area, with 67 runs scored through 8 games. White County has an inside track on the region right now, which makes sense after spending multiple years up in Class 4A. While the whole body of work is a little better than Lumpkin’s, White County lost in the head-to-head matchup, thus pitting it right below LC for now.

#8 RABUN COUNTY

RECORD: 4-2 (0-0)
LAST RANKING: #9

The Lady Cats are off to a solid 4-2 start, outscoring the opposition 56-31 prior to Monday’s game against Stephens County.

#9 DAWSON COUNTY

RECORD: 1-3 (1-3)
LAST RANKING: #8

Dawson is trying to surface after a tough start to region play, currently 1-3 in that department.

#10 TOWNS COUNTY

RECORD: 3-3 (0-2)
LAST RANKING: #10

Towns County has fallen to both Commerce and Rabun to reside here in the rankings.

#11 STEPHENS COUNTY

RECORD: 1-9 (1-1)
LAST RANKING: #11

The Lady Indians finally got that illusive first win, and within region play to make it extra special. Still some work to do, but this team still has members of the team that made a deep playoff run just a couple of years ago.
