Pair of Area QBs Earn Top Ten Status

We’re looking at a special time in the history of high school football, with so many great QBs playing right now. It’s not like we haven’t seen a year in our area like it – in fact, the Class of 2018 QBs were pretty special – Bailey Fisher (Rabun), Coey Watson (Dawson), Cole Wright (Union), Jackson Bell (Stephens), and AJ Curry (Habersham).

But still, this year is really special when you look at the entire state. 5-star QBs Gunner Stockton (Rabun) and Brock Vandagriff (Prince Avenue Christian), and almost-4-stars MJ Morris (was at Carrollton), Sam Horn (Collins Hill), Jacurri Brown (Lowndes), Carlos Del Rio (Grayson), and Aaron McLaughlin (Denmark) are all under center this season.

In fact, Stockton and Vandagriff square off on September 11 at Rabun County in a game that ESPN was originally scheduled to televise. Since 2001, no 5-star QBs have squared off against each other in the state of Georgia until this matchup.

When Georgia High School Football Daily came out with their Top Ten QBs (as part of their Top Ten by position segment), two familiar names came out – Gunner Stockton and J Ben Haynes.

Stockton is a Preseason All-American who just narrowed his choices down to two – UGA and South Carolina. He’s set for another monster season as a junior. Through two seasons, he has passed for 6,390 yards and 77 TD, and rushed for 1,835 and 36.

Nearby, White County’s J Ben Haynes is poised for his swan song for the Warriors. He has thrown for 5,307 yards and 37 TD, and rushed for 702 and 20.

Both quarterbacks were named as Top Ten QBs in the state heading into the 2020 season.
