Diamond Preview 2020: Union County

Union County made a great run behind Banks County in region 8-AA, and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the eighth time as a program since 2006. Stephen Mitchell brings some great talent back to make another historic run in 2020.

Head Coach: Stephen Mitchell, 3rd Season
2019 Record:
16-15; State Sweet 16; Region Runner-Up

“We will be in the hunt for a wide open 8-AA title,” says Mitchell. “It is a smaller region this year, but all four teams have proven their worth with Banks County (defending State Champs) at the top of the class last year, and Rabun and Elbert making up a strong group that were part of a four-way tie for third place in the regular season last year. It will be a dog fight to the finish. Seeding will be important heading into a strong field in the AA state tournament.”

Key Departures: Mary Wischmeyer, Megan Bright, Miranda Lockaby, Krysten Hodges

Key Returning Players: Trinity Queen(P), Hannah Patton (C), Lexi Sisum (OF), Ansley Collins (OF), Aubrie Banton (OF), Caley Davis (IF), Emma Roxbury (IF)

Trinity Queen returning is a HUGE plus for Union. Losing Mary Wischmeyer hurts, but there are lots of experienced players on this roster.

Strengths & Areas of Focus

Strengths: Returning a strong battery from the 2019 season, as well as several starters in both the infield and outfield. Several Juniors and sophomores are competing for their chance to crack the lineup. A very solid freshman class will push the upperclassmen and compete for multiple positions as well.

“This is a very athletic and versatile team with depth across the board,” says Mitchell.

Focusing On: “Filling the offensive shoes of middle of the lineup hitters Mary Wischmeyer and Miranda Lockaby will be crucial,” says Mitchell. “Finding a committee of pitchers to replace Megan Bright will also be a priority. Offensive improvement has also been a focus, along with polishing defense and pitching.”
