Diamond Preview 2020: Dawson County

Dawson County was near .500 last season, and narrowly missed out on state. Long-time coach Jimmy Pruett is looking for more consistency this time around, and certainly has the talent to make a legitimate run at a region title in 7-AAA in 2020.

Head Coach: Jimmy Pruett, 12th Season
2019 Record: 13-15; Region 5th
“Overall we feel that with the experience gained from last season, that will benefit us this year,” says Pruett. “The new region is going to be very competitive.”
Personnel
Key Departures: Kaseyln Martin, Kaitlyn Bennett, Kendall Martin, Kailey Hamilton
Key Returning Players: Bella Henson, Brea Crane, Oliva Martinez, Annsley Kirby, Rylie Erickson, Reece Moore
Kaselyn Martin and a few others will be missed, but there is great leadership and experience coming back, starting with Bella Henson and Olivia Martinez. Much will be expected of Reece Moore as a pitcher this season as well.
Strengths & Areas of Focus
Strengths: The infield is pretty stout with Henson at first, Martinez at short when not pitching, Kirby behind the plate, and Erickson at third. The offense has to be considered a strength with the talent coming back.
Focusing On: Pruett suggests trying to learn the younger players strengths and weaknesses is a big focus. “We are working hard on making all of the routine plays,” says Pruett. “Also trying to keep everyone COVID free.”
