Baseball March Power Rankings

Every team has played at least 4 games in 2020, and while we have a better grip on the baseball scene, there is still a logjam around the middle of the pack. Let’s take a stab at this.

1. DAWSON COUNTY

RECORD: 8-0 (0-0)
LAST RANKING: #6

The Tigers are blistering hot to open the season, going 8-0 out of the gate. That includes outscoring opponents 110-11…read that again out loud. It’s insane. Hudson Sapp, defending Player of the Year, is once again dominating as if he wouldn’t mind winning that award again. A big jump up to number one until someone can prove them otherwise belonging here. Right now, the Tigers are ranked #9 in the AJC Class 3A poll.

2. BANKS COUNTY

RECORD: 6-4 (1-1)
LAST RANKING: #2

The Leopards are off to a solid start. They’d love the loss to Union back, as Banks split the first meeting with the Panthers. We’re expecting a lot from this program in 2020.

3. COMMERCE

RECORD: 5-2 (0-0)
LAST RANKING: #3

Commerce opens the slate at 5-2 prior to region play. Colby Rogers continues to have a fantastic season, and should be a front-runner for Player of the Year consideration. The Tigers are ranked #6 in the state in Class 1A Public.

4. LUMPKIN COUNTY

RECORD: 5-5 (0-0)
LAST RANKING: #7

The Indians have two wins over Union, and another over White County to assure them ahead of both of those teams right now. Lumpkin is expected to push for a playoff spot out of 7-AAA this season.

5. HABERSHAM CENTRAL

RECORD: 4-4 (0-0)
LAST RANKING: #8

The Raiders have wins over Stephens and White County, and then dropped a second game to Stephens. Region play is going to be ridiculously tough as usual for these guys playing in Class 6A.

6. STEPHENS COUNTY

RECORD: 3-4 (0-0)
LAST RANKING: #4

Stephens County is off to a respectable start, but there’s room to improve. The Indians have split with Habersham Central so far in 2 games between the rivals.

7. WHITE COUNTY

RECORD: 4-5 (0-1)
LAST RANKING: #11

The Warriors would like a better W-L mark, but still have a win over Rabun to give us some benchmark to go by. Losses to Lumpkin, Habersham, and Dawson also give us a clear idea of where White County currently resides. This team has the makeup to make a playoff run out of 7-AAAA.

8. JEFFERSON

RECORD: 1-7 (0-0)
LAST RANKING: #1

Not the start we all anticipated for the Dragons. Some of that comes down to strength of schedule in non-region play, and some of it boils down to the immense amount of talent that departed the program due to graduation last year. Still, we have to believe that Jefferson will start to chalk up the Ws soon enough. Jefferson was ranked #1 for most of last year in Class 3A, and as of this week are out of the state polls.

9. TOWNS COUNTY

RECORD: 4-1 (0-0)
LAST RANKING: #12

The Indians are off to a rapid 4-1 start, and you can thank Aidan Berrong for much of that. He has welcomed the workload increase and has led Towns to this good start.

10. UNION COUNTY

RECORD: 3-5 (1-1)
LAST RANKING: #5

The Panthers got a huge boost with a split over Banks to get a tally in the win column within region play. John Mancuso is the early standout for this group, as he has been a consistent force in the lineup.

11. TALLULAH FALLS

RECORD: 2-2 (0-0)
LAST RANKING: #10

Tallulah Falls has evened its record to 2-2 early on. Still not much clarity until the Indians play some other teams in our area. That will give a greater idea of who sits where.

12. RABUN COUNTY

RECORD: 0-5 (0-2)
LAST RANKING: #9

Rabun is off to an 0-5 start early on, and dropped both region games. A loss to White County puts them below the Warriors for now in our rankings. Still, Gunner Stockton recently blasted a pair of homers, proving he’s more than just a football star.
