Four-4-Four: Quartet seek Final Four berth [Elite 8 Previews]

We don’t want to put the cart ahead of the horse, but a single win separates Jefferson (boys and girls both), Union girls, and Banks boys from advancing to their respective Final Fours. These seasons are already historic…but things can go from elite to legendary real fast…more specifically, 32 more minutes of great basketball. Here are the 4 remaining teams left in contention around our area:

BANKS CO LEOPARDS vs CHATTOOGA

RECORD: 25-4 (12-2)
REGION: Region Regular Season & Tournament Champions
STATE RANKING: #6
RND 1: W 71-45 vs #4 Washington (6-AA)
SWEET 16: W 61-58 vs #3 Butler (4-AA)
ELITE 8: vs #2 Chattooga (7-AA) // Wednesday, February 26 @ 6:30 PM

The Leopards got out to a quick 18-2 lead, and never trailed in the win over Butler. Banks was ranked #6 in the state, and Butler #5. The guys will once again be at home, and will once again need to start fast to put pressure on Chattooga.

JEFFERSON LADY DRAGONS vs GAC

RECORD: 25-4 (12-0)
REGION: Region Regular Season & Tournament Champions
STATE RANKING: #2
RND 1: W 62-55 vs #4 Coahulla Creek (6-AAA)
SWEET 16: W 64-33 vs #2 Pierce County (2-AAA)
ELITE 8: vs #2 GAC (7-AAA) // Wednesday, February 26 @ 6 PM

The Lady Dragons bounced back from a very close round one battle with Coahulla Creek, and gave us more optimism after a thrashing of Pierce County at home in the Sweet 16. Now comes another big test against GAC, who by all accounts are a solid, well-balanced team. Depth, however, may play a huge roll in this one, as Jefferson gets the edge there.

JEFFERSON DRAGONS vs MONROE

RECORD: 20-7 (9-3)
REGION: Region Tournament Champions
STATE RANKING: #7
RND 1: W 75-46 vs #4 Adairsville (6-AAA)
SWEET 16: W 65-57 vs #2 Pierce County (2-AAA)
ELITE 8: vs #1 Monroe (1-AAA) // Wednesday, February 26 @ 7:30 PM

The Dragons have mirrored the girls’ slate almost to the T, as both the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 opponents are exactly the same. While the first round was a walk in the park for Jefferson, the Sweet 16 was a bit harder to navigate. Nonetheless, this group is beginning to peak at the perfect time. In many ways this appears on paper to be a fairly even matchup. Being at home for Jefferson certainly helps.

UNION CO LADY PANTHERS vs EARLY

RECORD: 23-6 (9-4)
REGION: Region Tournament Champions
STATE RANKING: #6
RND 1: W 69-40 vs #4 Therrell (6-AA)
SWEET 16: W 61-37 vs #3 Butler (4-AA)
ELITE 8: vs #1 Early County (1-AA) // Tuesday, February 25 @ 7 PM

The Lady Panthers will once again be on the home court, and Early County having to make that LOOOONNNNG journey to Blairsville may play a big factor in the outcome here. Stopping Makayla Timpson (23.4 PPG, 10.5 RPG) will be a gigantic task, and even if you do, along comes Ta’Ziaya Jones (12.6 PPG) and Jordan Eafford (12.6 PPG). Still, Union has the power to combat with the #5-ranked team in the state.
