Dawson boys repeat as region champs; Union girls, Jefferson boys & girls, Banks boys also claim top spots

Monday wasn’t supposed to be the night of these games, but snowy weather on Saturday forced many teams to wait. Most all of them made it worth the wait, as Union girls, Dawson boys, Jefferson boys and girls, and Banks boys all claimed region championships on Monday evening.

The updated list of teams who have secured a playoff spot:

Thursday, February 6 (@ Gainesville)
#4 Habersham Central 47, #5 Gainesville 29
The Lady Raiders are heading to the state playoffs for the first time in 3 years. One of the biggest one-year turnarounds we’ve seen in quite some time, going from 5-18 a year ago to 13-12 and making state this season. The girls beat Gainesville 47-29, and the game was really never in question.

Friday, February 7 (@ Gainesville)
#1 Lanier 45 #4 Habersham Central 20
The Lady Raiders fell 45-20 to be pushed to the Consolation game to determine the 3 or 4 seed.

Thursday, February 6
#3 Winder-Barrow 77, #6 Habersham Central 68
The Raiders fell in an overtime thriller despite carrying a 9-point lead into the fourth quarter. They were outscored 13-4 in the overtime period, thus ending their season moments away from a state berth.




Tuesday, February 4 (@ White Co)

#2 White County vs #7 West Hall
The Lady Warriors punched a playoff ticket with a win over West Hall.

Thursday, February 6 (@ Flowery Branch)
#2 White County 54, #3 Flowery Branch 50
The Lady Warriors came back from down 5 at the break to win an exciting 54-50 game against Flowery Branch. This gets White County to the region title game, AND means they’re guaranteed a first round playoff game at home.

Monday, February 10
Championship: #1 Marist 54, #2 White County 45
The Lady Warriors dropped a hard-fought battle to Marist, but claim the runner-up spot from 7-AAAA.


Monday, February 3 (@ Blessed Trinity)

#4 Chestatee 74, #5 White County 72 (2 OT)
The Warriors’ season came to a close, but they fought down to the very end in a 2-point loss in double overtime, thus ending White County’s season.




Thursday, February 6 (@ Oconee County)
#4 St. Pius X 52, #1 Stephens County 41
The Lady Indians were upset in their first region tournament game, despite being the #1 seed. Perhaps the worst part here is that it means they’ll be forced on the road to start the state playoffs, and on Friday will play in the Consolation game to determine the 3 or 4 seed. It will be imperative for the girls to win this game.

Consolation: #1 Stephens County 65, vs #2 Madison County 57
The Lady Indians claimed the 3rd seed out of 8-AAAA with a 65-57 win.


Tuesday, February 4 (@ St. Pius X)

#4 Oconee County 61, #5 Stephens County 50
The Indians saw their season come to a close ina 61-50 loss to Oconee.




Wednesday, February 5 (@ North Hall)

#5 Fannin County 55, #4 Lumpkin County 45
The Lady Indians for the second straight season were upset in a tournament game that could have produced a playoff berth. Kate Jackson had 13 to lead Lumpkin in the effort. The girls’ season has come to a close.

#3 Dawson County 52, #6 East Hall 46
The Lady Tigers punched a playoff ticket for an 8th straight season after a 52-46 win over East Hall. Marlie Townley led with 22 points and 15 boards, adding 5 blocks and 2 steals. Maddie Anglin had 11 points, and Sophia D’Oliveira had 8 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

Friday, February 7 (@ East Hall)
#2 North Hall 72, #3 Dawson County 51
The Lady Tigers fell 72-51 to North Hall and will play in the consolation game against Fannin County.

Monday, February 10 (@ East Hall)
Consolation: #5 Fannin County 54, #3 Dawson County 42
The Lady Tigers fell 54-42, taking the 4th seed in 7-AAA. Marlie Townley led with 19 points.


Tuesday, February 4 (@ GAC)

#4 Cherokee Bluff 72, #5 Lumpkin County 50
The Indians’ season came to a close in a 72-50 loss to Cherokee Bluff. Peyton Polk and Jacob Cumbie combined for 35 points in the loss.

Friday, February 7 (@ East Hall)
#1 Dawson County 70 #4 Cherokee Bluff 62
The Tigers edged Cherokee Bluff 70-62. Jasper Gibson had 24 points in the win, while Mason Barnes had 18 for Dawson as well.

Monday, February 10 (@ East Hall)
Championship: #1 Dawson County 70, #2 GAC 63 (OT)
The Tigers repeated as Region Champions over GAC, this one in OT fashion. Campbell Reed had 21 points to lead Dawson, while Mason Barnes, Jasper Gibson, and Eli Burrus all scored in double figures as well.

#1 Jefferson 64, #4 Jackson County 33
The Lady Dragons cruise into the region title game with a big win over Jackson County.

Monday, February 10 (@ Emmanuel College)
Championship: #1 Jefferson 55, #2 Morgan County 37
The Lady Dragons were led by Livi Blackstock’s 16 points, while Courtney Kidd had 14. Jefferson was unbeaten in region play this year, and grab the outright region title


Friday, February 7 (@ Emmanuel College)
#1 Jefferson 86, #4 Monroe Area 59
The Dragons were led by Jacob Radaker’s 23 points, while Malaki Starks had 19 in the 86-59 blowout win.

Monday, February 10 (@ Emmanuel College)
Championship: #1 Jefferson 76, #2 Franklin County 67
The Dragons won the title with a decisive 76-67 win over Franklin, while Owen Parker led the scoring with 15 points, and Daniel Parker 14. It was the first region title for Jefferson boys basketball in 6 years.

#5 Banks County 71, #8 Oglethorpe County 14
The Lady Leopards went on a tear, and claimed a playoff spot with a win over Oglethorpe.

Tuesday, February 4 (@ Union County)

#5 Banks County 61, #4 Elbert County 59
Banks County hit a buzzer-beater, as Pollie Simpson’s 21 points led the way. Jenna Reeves had 15.

#3 Union County 53, #6 Social Circle 23
The Lady Panthers secured a playoff spot with a 53-23 blowout win over Social Circle. Ava Hunter’s 13 led the way.

Friday, February 7 (@ Rabun County)
#3 Union County 59, #2 Putnam County 51
The Lady Panthers were led by Ava Hunter’s 25 points as they advanced to the region title game with a thrilling 59-51 win over Putnam.

#5 Banks County 74, #1 Rabun County 71
In a shocker, Banks County upended Rabun County, 74-71, as the Lady Cats are faced with now having to play on the road to open the state playoffs. Banks County will be guaranteed a home game, but also have a shot to play for a region title.

Monday, February 10 (@ Rabun County)
Consolation: #2 Putnam County def #1 Rabun County
The Lady Cats were upset for the second straight game, and will face a very difficult path in the playoffs as a #4 seed (the very best #4 seed out there).

Championship: #3 Union County 37, #5 Banks County 33
The Lady Panthers won their first region title in over 10 years with a low-scoring hard-fought win over Banks. Ava Hunter led the way with 12.


Tuesday, February 4 (@ Union County)

#5 Putnam 47, #4 Rabun 46
Rabun had a double-digit lead dissipate in the fourth, falling by one point. That ends Rabun’s season.

#3 Union County 66, #6 Elbert County 49
The Panthers punched a playoff ticket with a good win over Elbert. Pierson Allison had 25, and Sawyer Drake 18.

Friday, February 7 (@ Rabun County)
#2 Social Circle 62, #3 Union County 58
The Panthers came up just short despite Pierson Allison scoring 21, all while missing the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

#1 Banks County 66, #5 Putnam County 53
The Leopards rolled into the Region Championship with a 66-53 win over Putnam. Carl Cleveland had 20 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks. Dakota Orr had a double-double also of 18 points and 10 boards, along with 8 assists, 4 blocks, and 3 steals.

Monday, February 10 (@ Rabun County)

Consolation: #3 Union County 69, #5 Putnam County 49
It was an easy win for the Panthers, as Sawyer Drake eclipsed 1,000 career points in the win. He finished with 20 in the game.

Championship: #1 Banks County 65, #2 Social Circle 44
The Leopards won the region championship with a 65-44 victory over Social Circle. Carl Cleveland was named Player of the Year for 8-AA, while teammate Dakota Orr was a 1st Team honoree as well.




Monday, February 3

#7 Commerce 47, #10 Athens Christian 19
Commerce won easily, 47-19 to advance in the tournament.

Tuesday, February 4

#3 Tallulah Falls 44, #6 Towns County 21
The Lady Indians won 44-21 as Denika Lightbourne had 14, and Katy Corbett 12. This likely ends Towns County’s season.

Wednesday, February 5

#2 Lakeview 79, #7 Commerce 49
The Lady Tigers fell by 30 to Lakeview. The girls now await the end-of-season power ratings to determine if they qualify for a postseason spot.

Friday, February 7
#2 Lakeview 47, #3 Tallulah Falls 45
The Lady Indians fell 47-45 in a very tight battle against Lakeview.

The Tigers’ season likely ends with a tough 59-55 loss to Athens Academy.

The Indians fell in a heart-breaker to RMA by 4 points. They’ll now await the GHSA Power Ratings to determine if they qualify for the state playoffs.

#2 Towns County 56, #7 Athens Academy 45
The Indians cruised to a win over Athens Academy, leading them to the region semis on Friday.

Friday, February 7 (@ Commerce)
#2 Towns County 51,#6 Lakeview Academy 41
The Indians advanced to the title game for the first time in history after a 51-41 win over Lakeview.

Monday, February 10 (@ Commerce)
Championship: #3 Riverside MA 65, #2 Towns County 49
The Indians, playing for the first time in a region title game, fell 65-49.
