Banks County had to wait for it. It’s been years in the making, but on Monday evening on the home field, the Lady Leopards (33-3) finished off Bremen, 6-1 to claim the program’s first-ever state championship.
After finishing third two years ago, and state runner-up last season, the girls came in determined to win the final game. Banks County outscored opponents 77-0 throughout the playoffs up until the title game against Bremen.
After going up 4-1 in the fifth inning, rain hammered down in Columbus on Saturday. After a lengthy delay, it was determined that the game would be resumed in Homer on Monday. While the waiting was almost unbearable, the Lady Leopards got the rare opportunity to close it out in front of the home crowd.
And they did. Banks County had an historic, unprecedented run to claim the number one spot. The 2019 run included a record-shattering performance by star Tybee Denton, who broke the single-season and career homerun record, eclipsed nearly every milestone imaginable, and more.
The Lady Leopards were ranked #1 in the state almost wire to wire, and played like it consistently. The 32 wins is a record for the program, and the region championship was the second in three years.
