8 teams alive as second round of playoffs begin
It was a thrilling round one last week, and still 8 of our local softball programs move on to the second round. Only Habersham Central and Stephens County fell in the opening round, while Jefferson and Lumpkin survived after being forced to game three. Weather permitting, here are the round two matchups set to begin tonight, with the “if” games slated for Wednesday.
The Lady Indians (18-12) had their hands full with Westminster last week in Dahlonega. After a dominant 9-1 opening win, Lumpkin fell 2-0 with a chance to clinch. Game three, the girls made it as dramatic as possible with a walkoff, come from behind win, 6-5 to advance to the Sweet 16. This is the first time advancing to the second round since the 2012 Elite 8 run to Columbus.

The Lady Dragons (23-9) were pushed to the brink of elimination, but survived against visiting Sonoraville, who took the opener 11-1. Jefferson scratched and clawed for a 7-6 dramatic game two win to keep the season alive and force game three. It was then that the Lady Dragons did it again, with a 5-4 victory to advance to the second round.

The Lady Leopards (26-3) made quick work of #4 KIPP, winning by records 30-0 and 25-0 to cruise to round two.

The Lady Panthers (15-13) left nothing to chance, blowing through Therrell in opening action. After a 22-0 win in the opener, Union slowed its roll to the tune of 17-0 in the clinching game two.

The Lady Cats (13-7) didn’t have to throw a pitch to reach the second round, after South Atlanta forfeited both games to grant Rabun a pass to the Sweet 16.

The Lady Tigers (19-7) earned the first round bye as the #6 overall seed from 1A Public.
