Scores & Recaps: Week 7

Week 7 saw many in-region battles that helped shape up the early playoff picture. Here are the recaps for the local contests.

THE LOCALS

#2 Rabun County 52, Banks County 10

Up 45-3 in a blistering first half for the Wildcats, Rabun County rested its starters in the running second half, coasting to another region win and moving to 6-0 overall on the season.

Gunner Stockton got off to a fast start with a passing and 2 rushing TD in the first quarter. It was more of the same in the 2nd half, as Stockton ran for another and threw two more to push the lead to 45-3 at the half. He also threw a TD in the 3rd. All told, he had 3 rushing TDs and 4 passing TD.

#8 Union County 35, Elbert County 14

Things got off to a rough start. Neither team scored in the first, but on the first play of the game, star receiver Kyle Morlock reportedly suffered an ankle/lower leg injury. Late in the second quarter, Elbert put up the first points to go up 7-0. Pierson Allison found Cayden Rich for a 19-yd TD to tie it up in the final seconds of the half. With 4:30 left in the 3rd, Elbert took a 14-7 lead, but Jonah Daniel responded with a 21-yd game-tying TD. It was knotted at 14 going into the 4th, but Union took advantage of 4 turnovers to win the game. Allison found Sawyer Drake for a 28-yd go-ahead TD, then found Mason McCombs for a 34-yd TD to make it 28-14. After an interception, Union got a final score on an Allison 24-yd TD pass to Drake.

Allison threw for 4 touchdowns and 280 yds, while Drake caught a pair of TD passes and 151 yds for the Panthers, who survived a bit of a scare to move to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in region play.

#6 Dawson County 52, East Hall 34

Dawson County turned a defensive stalemate into a high-scoring affair. Riley Herndon collected his 4th interception of the season. The Tigers were down 6-3 before going ahead 10-6, but East Hall took a 12-10 lead in the 2nd. The Tigers battled back midway through the quarter for the 17-12 lead. A Shawn Thomas rushing TD made it 24-12, and the Tigers tacked on another score to go up 31-12 as part of 21 unanswered points. Herndon then tacked on ANOTHER pick, taking it 75 yards for a TD to push it to 38-12. The Vikings got a long TD, but the Tigers responded with a kickoff return for a TD to get it back to 45-20.

#8 Jefferson 33, Franklin County 0

The Dragons cruised to a 33-0 win over Franklin at Memorial Stadium. Colby Clark opened the scoring with an 8-yd TD in the first. A pick six by Malaki Starks made it 13-0. Starks then tallied a 43-yd TD run to push it to 20-0 at the end of one. In the second, Clark threw a TD pass to Josh Cochran (28-yds) for the 27-0 lead that held to the break.

#3 Lanier 42, Habersham Central 22

Habersham got behind early, 15-0 to Lanier. Joshua Pickett took a kickoff return 83 yards for a score to cut it to 15-7, which held until the break. Lanier took the second half opening kickoff to the house to go up 22-7. By late in the 3rd, it was 35-7 Lanier. Jackson Clouatre’s 8-yd TD brought it to 35-13, and the Raiders got another later to make the score 42-20.

Riverside 70, Towns County 6

The Indians still remain in search of their first win.

#5 Flowery Branch 45, White County 20

Down 24-0, White County got a J Ben Haynes TD pass to Will Sampson from 5 yards out before the break to pull it within 24-6. Haynes added an 18-yd TD run in the 4th to come within 31-13, and Zion McMullen’s short TD run made it 38-20. Flowery Branch scored again late to put it out of reach.
