Four named soccer Players of the Week
Far north of 20,000 votes were recorded in the FAN VOTE Player of the Week for Soccer. The top boy and girl vote-getter won the honors, while BLITZ chose one of each irregardless of voting outcomes. Ethan Contreras (9,480 votes) from Habersham won the boys’ vote, while Stephens’ Cadie Vena (1,290) won the girls’ vote. BLITZ then chose Roberto Quintal of Jefferson (8,690) and Hope Kenney from Lumpkin (972) as Co-Players of the Week. 21,245 total votes were recorded.
ETHAN CONTRERAS – FAN VOTE
Habersham Central is getting some good recognition this season, as now two Raiders soccer players have snagged the honors this season. Ethan Contreras is the latest, and he’s more than earned it for his recent play. The junior forward scored 3 goals and added 4 assists in the past four games, which has helped Habersham to a 5-3-2 mark, including a 3-2 record in region play. This is Contreras’ first POW award.
CADIE VENA – FAN VOTE
Stephens County had a gigantic hole to fill with the departure of the programs GOAT in Erin Carter from last season’s team. Cadie Vena, now a senior, has stepped up rather well in that role.
The forward has 11 goals and 3 assists on the season. Vena played primarily on defense and as a center mid for most of her first two seasons. Last year she experienced severe health issues in which she could not compete after the first few games. As she’s recovered, she has become the go-to striker. Her work ethic and determination, combined with her ability to play anywhere, shows her prowess. She scored 8 goals and added 6 assists in the last two games alone. This is Vena’s first POW award.
ROBERTO QUINTAL – BLITZ PICK
Jefferson junior forward Roberto Quintal has been knocking on the door for this award for awhile, and finally gets the answer. The Dragons have relied on him quite a bit this season, and he has also answered that call.
In the past two contests, he notched 3 goals and 1 assist amidst a season that has the Dragons ranked #10 in Class 3A with an 8-2 record, including a perfect 4-0 start to region play. This is Quintal’s first POW award.
HOPE KENNEY – BLITZ PICK
Hope Kenney is now a two-time Player of the Week award winner, as she took the honors once last season. She’s the type of forward who could easily be our pick each week.
Consider this: 13 goals and 4 assists. No, those are not season totals to this date, nor are they career numbers. These are from just the past 3 games. For the season, Kenney has 22 goals and 7 assists. As just a junior, she has a chance to break the school’s scoring record set by Alexis Satterfield (c/o 2016), who scored 32 goals as a junior in 2015 and 29 the following senior season to finish her career with over 80 goals.
Kenney’s numbers are well on track to break that. The breakdown is below, which shows her 65 career goals to go with 20 assists. She missed the majority of last season, or she’d probably already be there. At this rate, with at least 7 games left on the slate and all of next season, it should be a sinch. The Lady Indians are ranked #6 in the state and are 7-3 overall and 2-1 in region play.
