Seven local programs played in the opening round of the GHSA State Playoffs in their respective classifications, and in Saturday action, five of those seven advanced to the Sweet 16.
Jefferson, Lumpkin, Dawson, Rabun and Tallulah Falls all advanced with wins, while White County and Union County both lost their opening round matches.
Jefferson, a #2-seed, cruised past #3-seed Adairsville in the 3A bracket. Elsewhere in that classification, #3 Dawson County won 3-1 at #2 Murray County and in perhaps the biggest upset in the 3A bracket, a #4-seed Lumpkin took down #1 seed Ringgold 3-1.
Jefferson goes plays at #1 North Hall, while Lumpkin travels to #3 Jackson County and Dawson goes to #1 Calhoun.
In the 4A bracket, #3-seed White County fell 3-0 at #2 Lafayette.
In 2A action, #1 Rabun County earned a 3-0 win over Drew Charter, and now hosts #3 Armuchee in the next round. #4 Union, playing in its first-ever state tournament, fell 3-0 at #1 Elite Scholars Academy.
In the 1A Private section, #2 Tallulah Falls beat Mt. Pisgah 3-1 at home, and must now travel to #1 Hebron Christian.
Sweet 16 action is slated for Tuesday, October 23.
