Lumpkin cruises in top-5 showdown past White County [VIDEO]

In a top-5 marquee matchup between Lumpkin County and White County Tuesday evening, the visiting Lady Indians never trailed and cruised to a 69-43 win over the Lady Warriors.

#4-ranked Lumpkin (15-3; 5-1 in 7-AAA) used a 12-0 first-quarter run to create separation, and won by 26 points as all 69 points came from just 5 players. #3-ranked White County (15-4; 5-1) dropped its first region game, creating a logjam atop the standings.

Lumpkin jumped out to an 11-5 lead as Averie Jones drained a 3-pointer. White County responded with a 5-0 run to get within a point at 11-10, but the Lady Indians then reeled off 12 straight unanswered points to close the quarter. Jones again connected beyond the arc, this time to beat the buzzer and give Lumpkin the 23-10 lead.

The run reached 15-0 when Mary Mullinax converted a 3-point play to open the second. White County’s Maci Shelnut ended the scoring drought with a trifecta. Lumpkin’s lead reached 24 before White County got back within striking distance on Emma Lightsey’s 3-pointer and following 3-point play. Still, the Lady Indians led 40-22 at the break. Jones and Mullinax both had 10 first-half points, while Lexi Pierce went for 11. That trio combined for 31 points in the half.

White County made it interesting with a big third quarter. Chandler Weaver had a 3-point play, and Naomi Roberts did as well to pull within 46-32. Then Kylie Watkins and Roberts had back-to-back baskets to come within 10 points at 46-36. Pierce and Ciera Brooks had big 3-pointers for Lumpkin to start stretching the lead again, as the Lady Indians held a sizeable 54-36 lead going into the final period.

Pierce led the Lady Indians with a game-high 23 points which included 3 3-pointers. Mullinax had 18 points, while Jones and Brooks both finished with 12 apiece. Jones had a pair of triples. Kate Jackson closed with 4 points. White County was paced by Roberts’ 11 points. Aaliyah Anderson, Lightsey, Watkins, and Shelnut all had 6 points each. Claire Beckman added 5 points and Chandler Weaver 3.
