Jones’ 5 first quarter TDs power Oconee past Lumpkin [VIDEO]

CJ Jones put on a clinic. In 12 minutes of play, he tallied all 5 first quarter TDs as #6 Oconee County (7-4) took a 35-0 lead on the way to a 49-21 final over Lumpkin (8-3).

The visiting Warriors, a 3-seed out of 8-AAA, scored on their first 5 possessions to make no drama in the first round playoff game. Senior RB Jones got the first of his 5 scores with a 12-yd TD after QB Mac Ricks set it up with a long rushing play. That first dagger came with 10:55 to go in the first.

With 7:04 on the clock, Jones got in for a 2-yd TD to push it to 14-0, and after another Ricks big running play, Jones scored from 21 yards out, diving over the goal line for the 21-0 lead with 4:54 remaining. Meanwhile, the defense, anchored by 4-star Whit Weeks (LSU commit), was stifling.

After another Jones 2-yd plunge with 3:05 left (making it 28-0), Cameron Thurmond’s interception of Cooper Scott put Jones in a position to record his fifth TD of the quarter, and it came from 7 ticks out and the 35-0 lead.

Oconee stretched the advantage to 49-0 by halftime, but played primarily backups and JV from the second quarter on.

Mason Sullens notched a 5-yd TD run in the third to pull the game within 49-7. After a Harper Davenport interception going into the fourth, Gerald Walkers’s 4-yd TD bridged to gap to 49-14. Scott got a pass score later in the quarter to Carter Disanto make it a respectable 49-21 final score. It would mark the final TD pass of Scott’s career.
