Dampier set the school mark in the 200 Free (at the State Championships), 500 Free, and 100 Breaststroke, and also was on the 200 Medley Relay team that set a school mark. She was the runner-up in the 100 Free, 4th in the 200, 6th in the 400 Free Relay, and 10th in the 200 Medley Relay at the State Championships. Dampier will compete in college at Georgia Southern.
Meanwhile, White was a multi-State Champion, taking the top spot in the 100 Free and 100 Breast. He concluded his career as one of the top Union County swimmers in school history.
Voting included our 19-person panel made up of sports reporters, writers, video producers, former coaches, players, GHSA officials, and sports experts. The voting is Heisman-style, with the following points system:
1st place votes: 5 pts; 2nd: 3 pts; 3rd: 2 pts; 4th: 1 pts; 5th-6th: 0.5 pts; 7th-8th 0.25 pts
It was a dead tie and came down to the last vote. The weighted average actually favored Montgomery Dampier, but Hunter White took more 1st-place votes. 2 others earned 1st-place votes, but the seniors tied for Swimmer of the Year.
Dampier and White make it 3 seniors to claim the honors in just 2 years of this award. Both are the first from their school to earn it, and White is the first boy to have a share in the award.
