Girls Basketball Power Rankings – January

January brings about a new year, and with it come new Power Rankings!

#1 RABUN COUNTY

RECORD: 11-0 (0-0)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #2

Being the only undefeated team left among our local teams, and playing many ranked teams in the process earns the Lady Cats the prime spot. No sign of slowing down, though a date with our #2 team, Jefferson, is up next on January 12.

#2 JEFFERSON

RECORD: 9-2 (3-0)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #1

The Lady Dragons are the top-ranked team in Class 4A, where Livi Blackstock and Deshona Gaither are leading the charge, along with players like Ellie Kinlaw. Two straight wins and so far being unbeaten highlight the success for Jefferson.

#3 LUMPKIN COUNTY

RECORD: 11-3 (4-0)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #7

The Lady Indians have stormed back, winning 9 in a row after starting 3-3 on the year. The bar is set very high this year for Lumpkin, who has a great shot at taking a region championship if they continue to play this way. The girls are ranked #1 in Class 3A.

#4 TALLULAH FALLS

RECORD: 8-3 (1-0)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #5

Tallulah Falls is looking great, with a dynamic trio of Denika Lightbourne, Veronaye Charlton, and Katy Corbett leading the way. The team is ranked #10 overall in Class 1A Private. Wins have come in 6 of the last 7 games.

#5 HABERSHAM CENTRAL

RECORD: 8-2 (2-1)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #4

The Lady Raiders have a pair of wins this year over White County and a loss to Stephens, but starting out 2-1 in region play goes a long way to earning a potential state playoff spot.

#6 STEPHENS COUNTY

RECORD: 7-4 (0-1)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #3

Previously ranked #6 in the state, the Lady Indians are on a tough 3-game slide overall. Two of their losses this season are against Rabun, and wins have come over Habersham, Union, and Tallulah Falls. The recent slide knocks them down a peg or two, but this is likely temporary.

#7 BANKS COUNTY

RECORD: 11-7 (0-1)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #6

The Lady Leopards are back in the state poll, ranked currently #10 in Class 2A. Banks has wins over White, Commerce (twice), and Towns, while dropping a pair to Jefferson.

#8 WHITE COUNTY

RECORD: 2-6 (1-0)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #8

The record is not indicative of how good this team is. There are so many playmakers, and the best of all has been out to injury in Dasha Cannon. Her coming back will be pivotal to this team in its run to a hopeful region title. Even without their star senior, they got a big statement upset win at Dawson to open region play.

#9 DAWSON COUNTY

RECORD: 7-5 (1-3)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #9

Dawson has gotten off to a rough start in region play, though this team is very dangerous and has plenty of talent to make a region title type of run.

#10 COMMERCE

RECORD: 3-8 (0-1)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #10

The Lady Tigers got in the win column in their last game, and are hoping to use that momentum with a date against Towns County coming up next.

#11 TOWNS COUNTY

RECORD: 1-5 (0-0)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #11

Towns County hasn’t gotten too many games in yet, but there are skilled players on this team that could win on any given night. Despite 5 straight losses, the Lady Indians are seeking a win to get back on track.

#12 UNION COUNTY

RECORD: 1-3 (0-0)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #12

The Lady Panthers also haven’t gotten to play in quite some time. Union last played before we did our last Power Rankings in December.
