Marist Hands Jefferson FIrst Loss in 4A Title Game [VIDEO]

Nothing for the Jefferson Dragons to hang their heads about following a 30-14 loss in the 4A State Championship game in Atlanta on Tuesday. #1-ranked Jefferson (14-1) had a share of the lead at 14 apiece going into the break before Marist used a safety and two touchdowns to shut down the Dragons in the second half.

Jordan Perry had a pair of first half touchdowns after Jefferson fell behind early, and Malaki Starks and Paxton Corkery put up many highlight plays in the championship match.

Marist got a pair of rushing scores from George Parker and Champ Davis in the first quarter, as the War Eagles quickly went up 14-0. Jefferson responded in a big way when Starks hooked up on a pass play to a leaping Perry, which got the Dragons in the red zone. Jefferson opened the second quarter with a Perry 9-yard TD run on a toss sweep to the left, cutting the deficit to 14-7. After a huge pickup on a Kam Robinson run later in the quarter, Perry scored on an identical play from 4 yards out, knotting the score at 14 apiece.

The Dragons got back in the red zone just before the half when recovering a fumble and then Starks running one down deep into enemy territory. However, Starks’ pass attempt to the end zone in the final seconds of the half was picked off by Josh Moore.

The second half was all Marist, as the War Eagles opened with a safety on Robinson and the Dragons to go up 16-14. Both teams traded empty drives throughout the third before Marist’s Ian Otten found pay dirt just a minute into the fourth to spread the gap to 23-14. Andrew Mannelly added an 18-yd TD run with 5:45 to go to put the finishing touches on the game, as Marist held on for a 30-14 win.

Starks had 80 rushing yards and 27 passing, while Robinson had 69 rushing yards and Perry 29 (as well as 27 receiving). Corkery had 8 tackles and 2 sacks, while Jaheim Hardy recorded 6.

It marked the second title game that Jefferson has played in over the past nine seasons, and wound up being the third career state title for long-time coach of Marist, Alan Chadwick, who turned in win number 399 in the process.
