Game of the Week: Callaway vs Rabun County

Our Game of the Week sends us to Hogansville for the Class 2A Semifinals between Rabun County and Callaway.

RABUN COUNTY

Rabun County had to endure a nail-biter in the quarterfinals. The Cats were clearly better than Bleckley County, but got in their own way with stalled drives in the red zone that led to THREE missed field goals, 2 INTs, a 60-yd TD called back in a pivotal moment late in the game, and fluke TDs like a blocked punt for a TD and a 96-yd TD run. Still, they pulled it off in OT. Going to Callaway presents a bigger test, as the Cavaliers have been red hot this postseason. Rabun MUST avoid stalled drives and MUST win at the line to win this game. The good thing is that Rabun doesn’t have to have a TD catch from Adriel Clark to win, as proven last week. Still, he is just one shy of setting the state record for a single season. Gunner Stockton is now at 9,411 passing yards for his career, which in the last game put him ahead of former Cats star Bailey Fisher.

CALLAWAY

The Cavaliers ride into this game on a hot streak in which they had almost no problems with Thomasville, who was favored to win in the quarterfinals. Callaway is led by standouts Charlie Dixon (RB), Demetrius Coleman (QB), Jalin Shephard (WR), and Osiris Rivas on defense.

OUR PREDICTION

Another week, another state-ranked difficult team. This season, Rabun has faced #2 Prince Avenue Christian, #1 Jefferson, #9 Bremen, #5 Haralson County, #7 Bleckley County, and now #3 Callaway. They’ve won all but one (Jefferson) with the final coming this Friday. Callaway has a few common opponents of Rabun, and those are Bremen, Haralson County, and Banks County, though the latter forfeited their first round playoff game. Callaway beat Bremen 26-16, while Rabun beat them 48-34. That doesn’t mean a whole lot in the grand scheme, but it might translate into something. The Cats cruised past #5-ranked Haralson in the opening round of the state playoffs, while that team dealt Callaway its lone loss. As was the case last week, if Rabun takes care of the ball, converts in the red zone, and wins at the line, they should pull out a win here to advance to the title game for the second time in 4 years. OUR PICK: RABUN COUNTY

DO WE BRING LUCK?

For Rabun County, we’ve captured exactly 45 games, and the Wildcats are 36-9 in those.
