Football Power Rankings – Week NINE

Once again, all things hold true for our Power Rankings, as the order stands pat for a third straight week.

#1 JEFFERSON

LAST RANK: #1
RECORD: 6-0 (2-0)
LAST: BYE
NEXT: vs Chestatee

The #1-ranked Dragons got a much-deserved bye week, and now prep for a Chestatee program that is winless in 2020.

#2 RABUN COUNTY

LAST RANK: #2
RECORD: 7-1 (1-0)
LAST: W 71-0 vs Banks County
NEXT: @ Elbert County

#1 Rabun went into the Banks County game averaging a state-best 44.3. They nearly doubled that output against the Leopards. And for those thinking Rabun ran up the score, consider that Gunner Stockton attempted his fewest passes in any game this season, and for a season-low 115 yards. He made it all count though, accounting for 6 total TDs. Next up is a date at the Granite Bowl in Elberton, which more than likely determines the region title!

#3 COMMERCE

LAST RANK: #3
RECORD: 6-1 (2-0)
LAST: BYE
NEXT: @ Social Circle

The #3-ranked Tigers got a bye week before the final stretch run. Commerce takes on Social Circle on the road this week.

#4 DAWSON COUNTY

LAST RANK: #4
RECORD: 4-3 (3-0)
LAST: W 38-21 @ West Hall
NEXT: vs #9 Cherokee Bluff

Dawson County edged West Hall in a game that was closer than we really anticipated. Still, the Tigers have rattled off 4 straight wins, and are getting hot at the right time. Next up is a home game against #9 Cherokee Bluff, who has yet to lose this season. This game very well could determine the region championship.

#5 WHITE COUNTY

LAST RANK: #5
RECORD: 5-2 (1-2)
LAST: BYE
NEXT: vs Lumpkin County

The Warriors got a bye week, and now prepare to host Lumpkin in a game that would move White County to 2-2 in region play should they grab a win. Will J Ben Haynes make his return for the Warriors? He’s been out 3 weeks now after getting hurt in the Week 6 loss to Dawson County.

#6 STEPHENS COUNTY

LAST RANK: #6
RECORD: 4-3 (0-2)
LAST: BYE
NEXT: vs #10 Hart County

Stephens County got a bye week to reflect on themselves after dropping two straight in region. Things will be as tough as ever when taking on big-time rivals Hart County in a game that may determine the fate of the Indians’ playoff hopes.

#7 HABERSHAM CENTRAL

LAST RANK: #7
RECORD: 4-4 (2-2)
LAST: W 36-15 vs #9 Lanier
NEXT: vs Central Gwinnett

The Raiders came up with arguably their biggest win in the Benji Harrison era, taking down #9 Lanier and collecting FIVE interceptions in the process. It’s a monumental victory, as Habersham now holds keys to a playoff berth if they can grab one win in the next two games. They would love to do that this week against Central Gwinnett, and use their bye week to rest up for what would then be a final tune-up against Shiloh.

#8 UNION COUNTY

LAST RANK: #8
RECORD: 3-3 (1-1)
LAST: L 10-31 vs Elbert County
NEXT: @ Rabun Gap

Union County was in a close battle for awhile before Elbert County capitalized on multiple mistakes by the Panthers. Union will look to regroup when visiting Rabun Gap in a non-region game, which will be a tune-up for them prior to traveling to Rabun County in Week 11.

#9 TOWNS COUNTY

LAST RANK: #9
RECORD: 2-4 (0-1)
LAST: BYE
NEXT: @ Greene County

Towns County prepares to travel and take on Greene County after a bye week they probably didn’t want. After a 2-1 start that generated a lot of buzz in Hiawassee, the Indians have dropped three straight, had two bye weeks, and another hiatus with a game canceled due to COVID. It’s now been since September 18 since Towns grabbed a win.

#10 BANKS COUNTY

LAST RANK: #10
RECORD: 1-7 (0-2)
LAST: L 0-71 @ #1 Rabun County
NEXT: BYE

Banks County gets a bye week to rest up before a non-region game with Clarkston, and then the finale at Elbert County. The Leopards have been trying to find some consistency on offense, and may address some of those issues over the next two weeks.

#11 LUMPKIN COUNTY

LAST RANK: #11
RECORD: 0-7 (0-3)
LAST: L 6-41 vs #9 Cherokee Bluff
NEXT: @ White County

Lumpkin County stuck with Cherokee Bluff throughout the first half. The Indians have White, Dawson, and West Hall to close out the season, and will be hoping to perhaps steal a momentum win, or at the very least make those teams work for it a little bit.
