Banks County wins second BLITZ Cup in three years

The BLITZ Cup trophy will make its way back to Homer after a one-year stay in Jefferson. Banks County took its second BLITZ Cup in three years, and edged Jefferson by a mere 5 points to claim the trophy again. With an abbreviated spring season, there’s no way of knowing between those two and Commerce, who all three had a valid shot at the Cup.

Banks County benefited greatly from its softball team winning a state championship, as well as the great success of the basketball and cross country programs, along with wrestling. The spring was primed for more success too had it not been cut short.

HISTORY OF THE CUP (ALL-TIME CHAMPIONS)

  • 2019-20: BANKS COUNTY

    Banks County wins its second BLITZ Cup in 3 years in a COVID-shortened season. Banks had 177 points, edging Jefferson, which had 172.

  • 2018-19: JEFFERSON

    Jefferson wins its first Cup by a 2-point margin, which marks the third-closest finish ever. JHS had 198 pts, while Dawson finished with 196.

  • 2017-18: BANKS COUNTY

    Banks wins its first ever BLITZ Cup with an all-time record 201 Cup points. Commerce was 8 points behind with 193.

  • 2016-17: RABUN COUNTY

    Rabun County (156 pts) became the only school to ever 3-peat for the Cup. It wasn’t really close, as Dawson (142) finished 14 points behind, the largest ever Cup gap between 1st and 2nd place.

  • 2015-16: RABUN COUNTY

    Rabun made it back-to-back with 169 pts. This marked the second-closest finish ever, as Commerce was second with 168. Dawson (161) also was right there.

  • 2014-15: RABUN COUNTY

    Rabun County becomes a first-time Cup champion with 180 pts, a record at the time. It also was no doubt the closest finish ever as Dawson County (179.5) was 1/2 pt away.

  • 2013-14: WHITE COUNTY

    White County won its second BLITZ Cup with a cruise to the finish. WC had 175 points to second-place Rabun’s 137 and third-place Dawson’s 133.5. The 38-pt victory is by far the widest margin ever for the Cup.

  • 2012-13: DAWSON COUNTY

    Dawson County wins its second BLITZ Cup with 160 pts, overtaking Commerce (153) by 7 points. White County was close also with 150.5 pts.

  • 2011-12: HABERSHAM CENTRAL

    Habersham Central wins its first-ever BLITZ Cup with 127 pts, which was 13 ahead of Dawson’s 114 and Hayesville’s 105.

  • 2010-11: WHITE COUNTY

    White County won its first BLITZ Cup with a total of 142 pts to Lumpkin’s 116. The 26-pt gap is the second largest in the Cup history.

  • 2009-10: DAWSON COUNTY

    Dawson County won the inaugural BLITZ Cup with 122 pts, which led second-place Habersham (97.5) by 24.5 points.
