The #6-ranked Union County Lady Panthers (12-3; 4-1 in 8-AA) held off a pesky Banks County group in Homer on Tuesday evening, edging the Lady Leopards (7-10; 3-3) in a 45-40 region matchup. Ava Hunter’s game-high 12 points led the way to the win.
Union and Banks traded buckets for most of the first half, as the Lady Panthers led 17-12 after one, and 26-23 at the break. Banks County’s Jacy Ayers hit a big-time 3-pointer to give the Lady Leopards a brief second quarter lead, but Union’s Riley Allison answered back with back-to-back triples of her own to push the lead to 26-22.
Hunter had 8 of her 12 points in the first half, while Allison also had 8 in the half (9 for the game) off the bench. Neither team came out of the break firing on all cylinders, as the first points came on a pair of Banks County free throws with 4:32 left in the third. It was part of a small 5-0 run to get the Lady Leopards in front yet again, but Union’s Kait McCarter’s 3-point play with 3:05 jump-started the Lady Panthers. Both teams scored just 7 points in the third quarter.
Union went on a 9-0 run that bled into the final quarter, and went up 38-30 early in the fourth. The home Lady Leopards went on one more run, with senior Heather Vaughan going coast-to-coast for a layup to make it a 3-point game with under 20 seconds left. The Lady Panthers hit a pair of shots from the charity stripe to secure the win.
Hunter’s 12 led Union, while Allison and Andelin Hill both tallied 9. McCarter closed with 7, Ellie Cook had 5, and Brooke Dockery had 3.
For Banks, Vaughan’s 11 led the way, while Kamryn Grier had 9, Ayers had 8, Jenna Reeves 5, Pollie Simpson 3, and Hailey Seahorn and Kalyn Beasley 2 each in the loss.
