Dawson County’s Thomas’ season-opening return voted Play of the Year
Call it being prisoners of the moment, but right after Dawson County’s Shawn Thomas took the 2019 season-opening kickoff back for 6 points, we all knew he and the Tigers were in for something special. Little did we know the very first time hitting record for the season, would be the top play of the year.
BLITZ ranked that play as the top one based on the athleticism, what was at stake, and the significance of the score. We put it to a vote, and after multiple rounds, we took our 14 Play of the Year candidates, and all that was left standing was Thomas’ electrifying return for pay dirt. It was the beginning and end of 2019.
“I just knew I had to do something big to set the tone for the season, so I trusted in my team’s blocking, and took it back for 6!”-Shawn Thomas, Dawson SR RB
Thomas’ 90-yard kickoff return for a TD in Week 1 against Habersham Central set the tone for that game, as the senior led the barrage to a win for Dawson County. It really did more than that, though, as the Tigers used that jump-start to an 8-win season that culminated in a 2nd-round appearance in the playoffs.
The Play of the Year has been voted on for the past 3 seasons. Here are the winners so far:
- 2019 – Dawson’s Shawn Thomas season-opening 95-yd TD return
- 2018 – Braxton Hicks’ incredible catch from Gunner Stockton in opening round
- 2017 – Austin Jones’ finals-clinching TD in semifinals against Brooks County
Without further ado, here’s the Thomas play:
