Freshman Cannon, senior Mancuso claim Defensive Player of the Month award

It was White County’s Darius Cannon (12,013) who owned the public vote for Defensive Player of the Month, while BLITZ picked Union’s John Mancuso as well. In total, 21,531 votes were casted for the public fan vote.

Freshman Darius Cannon had a monster season by any season for the Warriors — let alone for a first-year varsity player. The cornerback closed out the last 4 weeks of the season with 22 tackles (1 for loss) and pickpocketed a couple of passes. For the season, Cannon tallied 52 tackles (1 for loss) and the 2 interceptions.

Just as you’d like to see from a freshman (or any player), he played better on the back half of the season, gathering 32 of his 52 tackles in the final 5 games. That included a career game against West Hall in which he had 7 tackles (1 for loss), 2 interceptions, and a 58-yard kickoff return.

Senior John Mancuso has been in beast mode since game number one. The strong safety came up with 28 tackles, including 3 behind the line over the last 4 weeks of the regular season. For Mancuso, he finished a regular season that saw him rack up tackles like they were going out of style, to the tune of 108 take-downs, 8 of the “for-loss” category.

The Panther had 2 sacks over the regular season, and came up big on the other side of the ball when needed. Against Banks County, Union was short-handed on offense. Mancuso played both ways in the game, and recorded 2 touchdown receptions on 6 catches for 82 yards. His career numbers (according to MaxPreps) consists of 202 total tackles, and 12 for loss, an interception, forced fumble, and fumble recovery.
