BREAKING: White County wins appeal, placed in 7-AAA; Region alignments revealed

On Tuesday night, GHSA heard appeals for schools to move up or down in classifications, and revealed the placements for all regions state-wide.

White County highlighted the local scene, as the school appealed to move down from 4A to 3A. It won, and will reside in 7-AAA with Dawson County and Lumpkin County.

Stephens County bumped down from 4A into Region 8-AAA, while Jefferson bumps up from 3A into Region 8-AAAA. All other locals (Rabun, Union, Banks, Habersham, Commerce, Tallulah Falls) all remained in the same regions, though some schools in their region are new to the scene.

These alignments will be in effect for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school years.

  • Buford
  • Dacula
  • Denmark
  • Habersham Central
  • Lanier
  • Winder-Barrow
  • Central Gwinnett

This is TOUGH for Habersham, as it picks up powerhouse Buford and Central Gwinnett.

  • Cedar Shoals
  • Chestatee
  • East Hall
  • Flowery Branch
  • Jefferson
  • Madison County
  • North Oconee

Jefferson moves back up into 4A, joining White County’s old region essentially.

  • Cherokee Bluff
  • Dawson County
  • Gilmer
  • Lumpkin County
  • North Hall
  • West Hall
  • White County

White County moves into its dream scenario. We are EXCITED to see the White/Dawson/Lumpkin trio duking it out, especially in football. This is a great region!

  • East Jackson
  • Franklin County
  • Hart County
  • Monroe Area
  • Oconee County
  • Stephens County

Stephens moves down into Jefferson’s old region, where it will still have great competition.

  • Banks County
  • Elbert County
  • Fannin County
  • Oglethorpe County
  • Rabun County
  • Riverside Military
  • Union County

Things just got REAL in the region for football. Rabun is still at the top of the heap, but newcomers Riverside and Fannin will fill in where Social Circle, Putnam, and Monticello are out. This got more competitive for sure.

  • Commerce
  • Greene County
  • Lincoln County
  • Social Circle
  • Towns County
  • Warren County
  • Washington-Wilkes

With the public/private split, the Athens powerhouse programs are now in their own region altogether.

  • It’s about time! Finally! No more recruits, International or otherwise! Single A is finally fair! So long Athens Academy! Hasta la vista George Walton! Adios Hebron! Au revoir Lakeview Academy! Catch ya later Athens Christian! Goodbye Prince Avenue! See you later Riverside Military Academy! Bye bye Providence! And finally, farewell Tallulah Falls! Commerce and Towns County will be in a region of their peers for the first time in a long time.
