Five local girls teams squared off in the second round of the state playoffs on Wednesday evening, and two survived to advance to the quarterfinals. Here are your second round recaps.

CLASS 3A
Jefferson Lady Dragons 2, Dawson Co Lady Tigers 0
#2-ranked Dawson (13-2-1) and #7-ranked Lady Dragons (13-4-1) fought hard, with Jefferson coming out with a 2-0 shutout win to advance to the 3A Quarterfinals. Through 18 games this season, the Lady Dragons have allowed just 9 goals, so the shutout would not be so shocking if it wasn’t that it came against Dawson County, who had scored 71 goals this season.
Jefferson moves on to face Pike County (Region 4 Champion) in the Elite 8 on May 7. The Lady Tigers’ season is complete.
Westminster 1, Lumpkin Co Lady Indians 0
The 11-7 Lady Indians came in ranked #8 overall, and the illustrious offense (76 goals) couldn’t break through against the overall #1 team in the state. It was an incredible performance defensively for Lumpkin, who ends the season with just 29 goals against, and allowed just one to the state’s best, who put up 100 goals so far this year.

CLASS 2A
Union Co Lady Panthers 5, Gordon Central 0
The #6-ranked Lady Panthers (12-2-1) cruised to another playoff win, this a 5-0 bashing of Gordon Central. Union’s center defense was phenomenal, highlighted by the play of Maddie Sutton and Ellie Garrison. The Lady Panthers’ keeper was rarely tested between the pipes.
The offense, meanwhile, continued to do its thing. Madison Yost notched another hat trick with 3 goals (7′, 36′, 57′), while Anzly Sherman had a pair of goals (51′, 77′) and 2 assists as well.
Union moves on to the quarterfinals for the third time in five years, and will take on the winner of Thomasville/St. Vincent’s on May 7.

CLASS 1A
Towns Co Lady Indians vs Ace Charter
Towns County (10-3-1) fell in a 3-2 heartbreaker to ACE Charter on Wednesday, thus ending its season. The Lady Indians finished with 66 goals against just 18 overall. This was the fourth consecutive playoff run for Towns, and second straight Sweet 16.
