Baseball Power Rankings: April

Down the back-stretch on the diamond!

Some things never change…like Jefferson baseball being pretty unbeatable. Take a look at our April BLITZ Power Rankings!

#1 JEFFERSON DRAGONS

RECORD: 16-0 (9-0)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #1

The Dragons aren’t moving from this top spot, maybe ever. We’re not worried about jinxing them…we’re way past that. There were two one-run victories this season, and only two other games were closer than five runs. These guys own the region and the defending state champs are looking to do it again. Only 26 runs allowed by what could be the best pitching we have ever witnessed (1.6/game). The offense is pretty good too (9.2/game). Total domination.

#2 HABERSHAM CENTRAL RAIDERS

RECORD: 16-5 (4-2)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #2

Habersham has done what it couldn’t the last two seasons – continue their domination into region play. Through dramatics and grinding out wins, the Raiders are sitting pretty at 4-2 in region play after taking two out of three from Gainesville. There’s still a lot to be done to secure state, but Hab currently resides in the #2 spot in the region and has the top-scoring offense in 8-AAAAAA, as well as the second-best pitching.

#3 BANKS CO LEOPARDS

RECORD: 14-4 (8-2)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #6

Banks County continues to rise. These guys are for real, and if you’re not buying in, what are you waiting for? The Leopards feature the second-highest scoring offense in the region and third-best pitching staff and defense. It’s a 3-way tie with Elbert and Social Circle for the region lead right now. There’s still some work to do, but you couldn’t have scripted a better season to this point, except maybe the current two-game losing streak.

#4 STEPHENS CO INDIANS

RECORD: 11-8-1 (1-2)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #3

The Indians are finally gelling with 3 straight wins heading into April. That’s after losing 6 of 7 at a very rough part of the schedule. The good news is they only have to be better than one team in the region to make state (5-team region). The bad news is everyone in the region is pretty good, so it’s not as easy as it sounds.

#5 COMMERCE TIGERS

RECORD: 12-6 (1-3)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #5

The Tigers have won two in a row to break a 3-game losing skid. No team in 8-A has more runs that Commerce (141 total; 7.8/game), but the 83 total runs allowed is among the most in the region.

#6 LUMPKIN CO INDIANS

RECORD: 10-9 (5-7)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #7

Lumpkin County lifted its playoff hopes with a series win over rivals Dawson, but there’s a lot left to accomplish to make that a reality. Frankly, these guys have allowed more runs than they’ve scored, so that has to change at some point. There’s a lot to like about this group, though.

#7 DAWSON CO TIGERS

RECORD: 7-8 (5-7)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #4

Dawson County has alternated wins and losses for much of the season, but losing two of three to Lumpkin hurts a good deal as both are fighting for the #4 spot in the region in the playoff push. Cherokee Bluff is in third right now. The Tigers quietly have one of the more balanced teams in the region (6.5 runs/game against 5.1 allowed).

#8 UNION CO PANTHERS

RECORD: 9-8 (6-4)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #11

The Panthers started out 0-6, and everything has changed since then. They finally got an 8-7 win over West Hall on March 5, and then dropped back-to-backs to Social Circle (2-0 & 2-1). Then it happened. An historic run for Union, winning 8 straight (and counting), which started with a 10-9 extra-inning walkoff win over Monticello. The team since has looked vastly different. Union sits in 4th place in the region, but just 2 games behind the 3-way tie for first. But also just one game above Rabun in fifth. Keep grinding Panthers!

#9 WHITE CO WARRIORS

RECORD: 7-10 (3-5)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #10

Five straight losses have the Warriors spinning. However, 3-5 in region play isn’t too bad, as they sit in fifth place and fighting with Flowery Branch and Chestatee for a playoff spot. Blessed Trinity & Marist (1 & 2 in region) are far ahead of the rest of the pack. Who doesn’t love parody? Should be an intense battle the rest of the way.

#10 RABUN CO WILDCATS

RECORD: 5-14 (5-5)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #12

Rabun has a couple of wins in a row now, and are right there in the playoff hunt. With many games remaining, this team can continue to drive toward the postseason. It’s a tight region, so anything can happen.

#11 TALLULAH FALLS INDIANS

RECORD: 5-7 (1-6)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #8

Tallulah Falls has dropped 5 of the past 6 games after starting out 4-2. The pitching has been fairly solid, but the offense (73 total runs) is the most anemic in the region. There is plenty of talent on the team to make a late push if they start now.

Casas en Georgia

#12 TOWNS CO INDIANS

RECORD: 6-11 (0-7)
PREVIOUS RANKING: #9

Towns County has put up back to back Ws after 8 straight losses. Will it be enough to make a playoff push? The offense has done pretty well this season (6.2/game), but the pitching has allowed 123 runs, third most in the region.
