While the homers didn’t result in a series win and a ticket to the quarterfinals, there’s no bigger moment than a win-or-go-home state playoff game. For Welch, he delivered in the clutch, earning BLITZ Player of the Week honors for his efforts.

Overall in the heart-breaking 8-7 extra-inning loss, Welch was 2-for-4 with the solo round-trippers, one a go-ahead shot and the other a game-tying homer.

The Tigers closed the season with 20 wins for the first time since at least 2012, and did so with a fifth straight state playoff run, advancing to the second round of their bracket for just the second time. They made the quarterfinals in 2015.

Welch also played solid defense throughout the playoff series, and got some outs on the mound when called upon. A junior, Welch will return along with players like Colby Rogers and Nate Ray to help propel Commerce back to the playoffs again next season.
