Coey Watson entered Week 10 with 96 career touchdowns. A true dual threat that started as a freshman, it was perfect for him to eclipse the elite milestone in a game against Dawson’s oldest rivals, Lumpkin County (1-8; 1-4). The Tigers (7-2; 5-0) won 42-21, setting up a Region 7-AAA title game next week in the regular season finale on the road at #1-ranked GAC.
Watson and the Tigers started slow, as neither team scored in the three possessions. Finally, Sevaughn Clark and Watson reeled off a few runs to set up a Watson 3-yd TD run to put the Tigers up 7-0.
The Indians tied the game up on a 1-yd Julian Hazen score early in the second quarter, which came after a 70-plus yard run by Evan Abernathy. The game remained tied just briefly, as Clark ripped off his own 76-yd run before being brought down inches from the goal line. Watson scored TD number 98 two plays later, giving Dawson the 14-7 lead.
After a Lumpkin turnover, Watson found Ryan Glass for a 46-yd TD (#99 for Watson), stretching the lead to 21-7 going into the break. The Indians successfully pulled off an onside kick to begin the half, and immediately scored on a 13-yd TD run by QB Chandler Woodham, making it a 21-14 ballgame.
The Tigers responded with Watson’s 100th TD of his illustrious career, going 18-yards to the end zone after having to escape pressure. The extra point missed, but Dawson had a 27-14 lead. Moments later in the third quarter, a Watson-to-Glass connection led to a 1-yd score by Clark, followed by a 2-point conversion by Watson to go up 35-14 heading into the final quarter.
Dawson went on to win 42-21, securing a home field playoff game and a rematch with #1-ranked GAC next week for the 7-AAA title. The two were in the same position a year ago, when GAC visited Dawsonville and won easily.
