Our Game of the Week takes us to Commerce for a much-anticipated season-opening scrimmage between visiting White County and Commerce.

COMMERCE

The Tigers lost their first six games of their new era under coach Lenny Gregory before winning the last two. All said, Commerce was far and away the best 2-win team in Georgia. Consider that their average margin of defeat was only three points, and just about every game was a play or two away from putting one in the win column. With nearly all the standout players back, including highly-touted prospects like QB Tate Kirk, RB Demarco Huff, and WRs Ty Sorrells and Essien Lockleer on offense, and things are looking very good right now. The defense has anchors such as Rivers West and Bronc Cash, and the coaching staff is easily one of the best in the state of Georgia.

WHITE COUNTY

The Warriors just got crushed by the injury bug last season. While several key players are gone, there’s still a lot of talent rolling it back – led by Gaines Clark and Zach Godfrey. New QB Brinn Robinson has those receivers to make his job a little easier, and RBs Savion Anderson and Jack Clark are up-and-comers. Defensively, there are a lot of new pieces. Overall, this team should be much improved from a year ago.

OUR PREDICTION

We typically make a case for both, with our official pick linked below. Let’s begin with the Tigers. They’re a year better with the new system, and again – all that talent returns. This is one of the favorites to win the region this year, and the skill position group is loaded and chomping at the bit. Commerce can win this one if it has at least four explosive plays for more than 20 yards. That’ll do the trick. White County’s shot to win this scrimmage for the varsity portion will include protecting the football, getting ahead early, and being opportunistic on defense. With it being just a scrimmage, no official prediction will be made – however, we think there should be plenty of offense.

For Commerce, the Tigers have gone 6-3 overall in our nine games covering them. Meanwhile, White County has gone 18-22 in the 40 we’ve been to for the Warriors, and have won the most recent we attended to snap a 4-game slide.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

These teams have met officially in the regular season a dozen times overall. In that span, the Tigers have won 11 of the 12 meetings. However, White County won the very first meeting back in 1962 in a 41-12 final in Cleveland. The Warriors were then shut out the next four meetings, and didn’t score again until 1971. In 1972 both teams were state-ranked, though Commerce won 28-19 in what was considered a big upset over #5-ranked White County. From 1970-79, these teams played each other eight times, and the ’79 version was the last meeting. The Tigers have pitched an astounding six shutouts in the 12 meetings.
