BLITZ Basketball Player of the Year: Mary Mullinax

Back-to-back for Mary Mullinax, who barring her one missed season early in her high school career would have likely become the school’s all-time leading scorer at Lumpkin County. The senior polished off her career with a State Championship appearance for a second straight season, as well as Region and BLITZ Player of the Year honors!

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • 17.7 PPG
  • 7.6 RPG
  • 3.7 APG
  • 2.9 SPG
  • 0.3 BPG
  • 49 3PT
  • 34% 3PT
  • 51% FG
  • 76% FT

Mary Mullinax put up gaudy stats all the way around. On a team chalk-full of unselfish players, including herself, she still found a way to put up 17.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.9 steals per game on average. That was good enough to once again be named All-State, win Region POY, and BLITZ POY. She dropped in 49 3-pointers, shot 34% from deep, 51% from the floor overall, and 76% from the line.

VOTING RESULTS

  1. Mary Mullinax – 60 pts (9 1st-place votes)
  2. Kamryn Grier – 39.5 pts (2)
  3. Denika Lightbourne – 35.25 pts (4)
  4. Averie Jones – 26.5 pts (1)
  5. Kyia Barrett – 20 pts (1)
  6. Lucy Hood – 18.25 pts
  7. Addison Hoard – 8.75 pts
  8. Naomi Roberts – 4.25 pts

Voting included our 17-person panel made up of sports reporters, writers, video producers, former coaches, players, GHSA officials, and sports experts. The voting is Heisman-style, with the following points system:
1st place votes: 5 pts; 2nd: 3 pts; 3rd: 2 pts; 4th: 1 pts; 5th-6th: 0.5 pts
7th-8th 0.25 pts

Mary Mullinax secured a relatively-easy win in the voting, but it wasn’t by any means a bygone conclusion. The panel loved several of the girls’ resumes, giving out 1st-place votes to 5 different players. Mullinax even had some down-ballot votes at 6th, 7th, and 8th with one each there. That’s a testament to the crowded and talented finalist pool. Kamryn Grier (Banks) grabbed 2 1st-place votes, and Denika Lightbourne (Tallulah Falls) had 4, as both of those players had ridiculous numbers. Mullinax’s teammate Averie Jones and Habersham’s Kyia Barrett also took 1st-place votes.
