Diamond Preview: Banks County Leopards

Banks County has been one of the most consistent teams in our neck of the woods for several years now. The Leopards posted 16 wins and made the Sweet 16 last season, marking their second such trip there since 2017. A great deal of talent rolled off the roster, but enough key pieces, including 7 starters, are in place for another big run.
HEAD COACH: Derrick Davis (2nd Season)
2022 RECORD: 16-12; 2A State Sweet 16; Region 8-AA Runner-Up
RETURNING STARTERS: 7
KEY DEPARTURES: Cade Herrin, Roman Haynes, Tripp Williams
KEY PLAYERS: Blake Holcomb, Carson Hill, Hunter Heath, Cam Cooper, Caine Griffith, Cam Davis, Nolan Angel, Judd Spear, Colin Caudell, Aucy Jacobs
STRENGTHS: “Very good core of seniors with varsity experience combined with many underclassmen that played key roles last season as well,” says Davis. “Getting a couple players back from injury will also be a huge addition to the varsity. This group is very close and business-like in their approach each day, always wanting one more rep and always looking to improve.”

Returning 7 starters and getting some guys back from injury bodes well for the Leopards. The all-new look to Region 8-AA makes it a bit intriguing for where the team falls among the region opponents. Look for big seasons from Caine Griffith, Cam Cooper, and others.
“Our goals are simple, play each day as if it was your last,” adds Davis. “Get better at accepting adversity and failure and continue to work to overcome it. Baseball will knock you down fast, we preach daily to stay mentally strong. Expectations are to play 7 innings, 1 out at a time. Never quit and let the results of our efforts show.”
