Diamond Preview 2022: Union County

Union County opens a new era under coach Carissa Owenby, who takes over after a four-year stay for Stephen Mitchell. Owenby inherits a team that is fresh off an Elite 8 run to Columbus, but has massive roster turnover with a large senior group just graduating. Still, Union County is always a team you can expect to battle for a region title, postseason berth, and a deep playoff run.

Head Coach: Carissa Owenby, 1st season
2021 Record:
13-11, Elite 8, #8 State Ranking, Region Runner-Up

“We will be competing every game and growing as a team all season long,” says Owenby.

Personnel

Key Departures: 9 seniors.

Key Returning Players: Chloe Potts, Jaycee Seabolt, Sierra Burnette, Gracie Gladding

Owenby points out that seniors Chloe Potts (2B) and Jaycee Seabolt (C/IF) are keys to the team’s success, as is junior P/1B Sierra Burnette and junior catcher Gracie Gladding.

Strengths & Areas of Focus

Strengths: “We have really good leaders this year as well as some young talent,” exclaims Owenby.

This bodes well for a team that is young and lost that solid senior class. Young talent and leadership will go a long way.

Focusing On: “Being competitive, working hard and getting better every day,” adds Owenby.
