Stockton sets state passing TD record as Rabun officially wins region championship [VIDEO]

It was probably the shortest and softest TD of his career, but Gunner Stockton made history with his 1-yard TD shovel pass in the first quarter, becoming the state’s all-time passing TD leader as Rabun County went on to win 56-14 over Union County in Blairsville.

Rabun County (9-1; 4-0 in 8-AA) officially secured its 8th consecutive region championship over rivals Union County (2-6; 2-2). Stockton racked up 5 touchdown passes, giving him 237 total for his career (all-time total TD leader), and 166 passing TD in his career, as well as 53 total TDs in 2021. He has 44 passing and 9 rushing this season.

Lang Windham scored the first couple TDs for Rabun, a 26-yarder to open the game on the first drive, followed by a monster 74-yard TD scamper to push the Cats up 14-0. Stockton hit Jaden Gibson later in the first on a 70-yard play that ended at the one. Stockton then escaped pressure and flipped a shovel pass to Tate Ramey to become the state’s all-time leader.

He went right back to work, finding Baxley O’Brien for a 22-yard TD to push the lead to 28-0 at the end of one. In the second, Stockton and Gibson connected on an 80-yard TD to pad the lead up to 35-0. Union County got on the board on a Logan Helcher 4th down TD pass to Caiden Tanner from 9 yards out.

Stockton then threw his own 9-yard TD to Windham, and Windham had a 14-yard rushing score moments later to advance the lead to 49-7. After recovering a fumble, the Wildcats added another on a Stockton-to-O’Brien 5-yard TD to make it 56-7 heading into the half.

The Wildcats didn’t play the starters in the second half, as Union tacked on the final score on a 1-yard rush by Connor Schuknecht. Stockton finished with 301 passing yards, while Gibson racked up 182 receiving and Windham 153 rushing.

Rabun gets a BYE week to close out the regular season, as the Wildcats will prepare for a hopeful state championship run. Union plays a non-region opponent at Gilmer next week to finish off the regular season.
