Six teams set for Sweet 16 matchups

A total of 6 local teams that started the postseason were able to advance to the second round. Here’s the matchups on tap for this week. The second round games are slated for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

#1 BANKS COUNTY vs #2 JEFFERSON DAVIS

The Lady Leopards (10-8) cruised past Coretta Scott King in the opening round by a combined 33-0. Jefferson Davis travels to Homer (23-6) will present an entirely new level of competition. made mincemeat out of Coretta Scott King, winning 15-0 in 3 innings in game one, and again 18-0 in game two to advance to the next round, which again will be played at home.

#2 COMMERCE @ #1 LANIER COUNTY

The Lady Tigers (19-6) outscored Armuchee 23-0 to advance to the Sweet 16, and now travel to Lanier County (21-5). Commerce seeks a third straight Elite 8 run to Columbus.

#4 DAWSON COUNTY @ #3 TATTNALL COUNTY

The Lady Tigers (13-18) pulled off a David and Goliath type of upset over #1 Westminster. Now, it’s a RARE 4/3 Sweet 16 game after Tattnall (12-12) also pulled off an upset. These are the type of runs you love to see in any sport, as either team could find a way into Columbus.

#3 JEFFERSON @ #1 WEST LAURENS

The Lady Dragons (15-9) made quick work of Arabia Mountain, winning game one 16-4 and game two 12-4 to advance to the Sweet 16. Jefferson will travel to West Laurens (20-8), and a win puts the Lady Dragons in the Elite 8 for the 4th time in 7 years.

#3 UNION COUNTY vs #4 TOOMBS COUNTY

Union County (10-9) won a series over Pace Academy, and get a rare opportunity to host after Toombs (17-13) had a big upset in round one. The Lady Panthers have a chance to get back to the Quarterfinals for the first time since 2015.

#3 WHITE COUNTY @ #1 SE BULLOCH

The Lady Warriors (23-5) won by a combined 29-1 over Sandy Creek. They travel to SE Bulloch (17-4) in hopes of reaching the Elite 8 for the first time since 2010, when they won it all.
