Panthers Shake Off Rust, Squeak Past Banks [VIDEO]

Playing for the first time in three weeks, the Panthers shook off the dust and scooted past Banks County 19-7 in Homer to open region play. Union County (3-2; 1-0) got nearly nothing going in the first quarter, but strung a few big plays in a row together midway through the second to spark the Panthers.

Logan Helcher scored a 66-yd TD run with just under 8 minutes to go in the first half. It came in a string of four consecutive plays that defined the first half. Helcher was intercepted by Carter Stroud deep in Union’s own territory. On the very next play, Banks County fumbled away the ball. Helcher had amnesia, forgetting his prior throw. He connected with Carson Walker for a big gainer, then took the next one himself for the go-ahead score. The extra point failed, so it was a slim 6-0 advantage for Union going into the locker rooms.

Helcher orchestrated a TD-scoring drive to open the third. After he got the Panthers inside the five yard line, it was Jonah Daniel who scored from a yard out for his first TD of the season. It was a feel-good moment, as Daniel had been sidelined since week one with an injury. The failed extra point kept the game at 12-0.

The Leopards got a 36-yd TD run in the fourth to make it 12-7, but Daniel got the final say so with a 24-yd TD catch and run for six points to give Union the 19-7 lead and win.

The Panthers move to 1-0 in region and 3-2 overall after a three week hiatus. Banks County is now 1-6 on the year and 0-1 in region play.
