We’ve flipped the calendar over to 2019, so we gather the data and results and deliver our updated BLITZ Boys Basketball Power Rankings.
#1 DAWSON COUNTY TIGERS
PREVIOUS RANKING: #1
The Tigers continue to hold strong at number one, and are currently ranked as high as #3 in the state polls. The guys are proving they can hang with the toughest competition, even #1-ranked GAC. The sky remains the limit for Dawson County, who is 3-1 within Region 7-AAA.
#2 JEFFERSON DRAGONS
PREVIOUS RANKING: #5
The Dragons climbed back up to the best they’ve been this season in our power rankings. This has a lot to do with the recent play of Jefferson, which has won 8-2 in the last ten games. The Dragons have many weapons to utilize and are sitting pretty at 3-1 in region play. Jefferson is state-ranked as high as #8.
#3 STEPHENS COUNTY INDIANS
PREVIOUS RANKING: #3
The Indians and senior Ty Nails continue to impress. Stephens holds at number three after going 6-2 in its last eight contests. The guys got region play off to a great start with a win as well.
#4 BANKS COUNTY LEOPARDS
PREVIOUS RANKING: #2
The Leopards are still very good, but slip a couple spots to number four. Carl Cleveland sets the tone for this bunch, but guys like Pierce Martin and Dakota Orr are stepping up big this season. The six losses can be a bit misleading, as Banks County plays a tough non-region slate, and are 3-0 in 8-AA.
#5 UNION COUNTY PANTHERS
PREVIOUS RANKING: #4
The Panthers hold true around the top of the pack, but two region losses hurts a bit. This is a team that will make some noise and can upset some upper-echelon teams on any given night.
#6 TALLULAH FALLS INDIANS
PREVIOUS RANKING: #6
Wins over Towns County and White County have the Indians here at number six, especially because right now they are 1-0 in the region.
#7 LUMPKIN COUNTY INDIANS
PREVIOUS RANKING: #8
Lumpkin started at #11 in our rankings pre-season, and have climbed to #7. However, the Indians have a lot of growing to do to compete in a tough 7-AAA, as they are 1-4 currently, and lost a game they shouldn’t have lost to White County (below in the power rankings).
#8 TOWNS COUNTY INDIANS
PREVIOUS RANKING: #9
Towns slides up to #8, its highest point this season. The Indians continue to get some solid play from Will Travis and others, and are 1-1 in region so far after taking down Commerce. Consistency has been hard to find though, as the team has lost to Union twice, Lumpkin, Tallulah Falls, and Rabun (who has only one win).
#9 HABERSHAM CENTRAL RAIDERS
PREVIOUS RANKING: #11
The Raiders come back up after hitting down at 11 last time, and a win over White County went a long way. There’s still much left to be desired from this team, but they can compete and have athleticism throughout the roster.
#10 WHITE COUNTY WARRIORS
PREVIOUS RANKING: #7
The rebuilding Warriors slide down a few notches under Lumpkin despite beating them earlier in the season. 0-4 in region play at the moment, and losses to Habersham Central and Tallulah Falls are just a couple of the mishaps in a season that the Warriors are sure to start gaining some momentum.
#11 RABUN COUNTY WILDCATS
PREVIOUS RANKING: #12
The Wildcats move up a spot and have one win on the season. It’s crazy though, because you can see how hot they can get in the 100-plus output win over Towns and the red-hot shooting night against Banks County in a close loss. The Wildcats are led by Kasin Old and many others who can be a threat.
#12 COMMERCE TIGERS
PREVIOUS RANKING: #10
The losing streak hits 11 straight for the Tigers, who are seeking for anything to propel them upward. It’s been a long season to this point, but we seek growth from some of the young players who can turn this thing around.
