Game of the Week Preview: Rabun seeks first Semifinal berth; travels to Screven

Rabun County cruised to its third consecutive State Quarterfinals with a convincing 35-2 victory over BEST Academy last Friday. For the third straight year, however, they have lost the coin toss and are forced to travel a LONG way for that quarterfinal game…this time to #2 Screven County.

Our Prediction: This one won’t come easy. Many are saying this is essentially a State Championship game being played in the quarterfinal round. The last two seasons, the Cats have fallen at this point, in 2015 by a field goal as time expired at Jefferson County, and in 2016 by a sizable margin at Fitzgerald. We’re calling the shot: Rabun edges Screven to advance to the Semifinals.

Stopping the running game of Screven won’t be easy either. Their ground attack features about 3,300 yards of offense this season, and it’s not just one guy doing all the work. Four players have 9 or more TDs and over 500 yards on the season rushing. What’s more, the team averages nearly 9 yards per tote (8.6 YPC).

Rabun County has scored 582 points this season (48.5 per game) and allowed just 111 (9.3). Screven has put up 473 points (43.3) and allowed a microscopic 80 total points (7.3). It’s safe to say the Wildcats haven’t seen a team quite like this, despite sporting a tough non-region schedule.
